Does KY have a better brand than UConn?
Arguably?

Out of Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, UConn, UNC, Gonzaga, or insert-name-here, who has the biggest brand now? (I’m really curious what an 18 year old basketball player thinks, as opposed to a “mature” fan)

Ironically, I didn’t think UNC would be able to poach a coach from Kansas, but they did.

Traditionally, it’s UNC or Kentucky or UCLA

Or Duke? But who has had more recent success than UConn? Houston? Certainly not Kansas or Kentucky.

OK. Include Kansas. But what do 18 year olds see as the elite brands? Obviously KY is doing something right? Or is just Cal? Will all these recruits roll over to Arkansas?
Cal with Tyson and Walmart NIL money will be pretty strong on the recruiting trail. 5 star guys know he puts guys in the league. I don't think they care location - more about who gets them where they want to go.

Are Tyson and Walmart dumping a lot of money into NIL? While they are doing really well, their market is not Arkansas.

Stories are out there that the NL commitment is a major part of why Cal would consider it. FYI Arkansas plays in the bud Walton Arena so I think the Waltons are pretty well committed to supporting the program

Scott Drew:

21 seasons at Baylor .646 overall and .522 in conference. 4 strait NCAAT bids (would have been 6 save for COVID year cancellation), but didn't get beyond the round of 32 in any of those seasons. Made NCAAT in 12 of his 21 seasons at Baylor. Made the Elite 8 twice but the last time was in 2012. Made the Sweet 16 in two additional seasons last time being 2017. Finished first in conference twice in 21 seasons, 2nd three times, and 3rd three times, including the last two seasons. (Finished in the top three in conference eight times in 21 years).

Elite enough for Kentucky?

That's terrific ... if you have a program buried in scandal and in need of a ground up rebuilding.

What about if you have a storied program where you are expected to go deep into the NCAAT on a yearly basis?

This is actually a good debate to have for this moment. UConn just won back to back Natty's so they are they CBB standard...and rightly so. How long will that last given the shifting foundations of college sports in general? UConn has some BIG money boosters that support the men's and women's programs, but how long can it keep going? As we're seeing now, any success UConn has, "bigger" schools will come knocking on their door.

The one thing you have to keep in mind is that UConn is considered a G5 program, and once SEC and B1G money REALLY starts kicking in, and the gap between SEC and B1G and rest of college becomes a chasm, how long can a school like UConn (which is well funded) continue to compete at the highest levels? Not just for coaches, but for players.

I saw some tweets that makes the case that UConn very rightly should be considered a "blue blood" program, at least with respect to CBB:

How long will that last given how much college sports will change over the next decade? There's a LOT of talk from UConn twitter that if Kentucky really pushes the money issue, UConn just can't compete. They are hoping Danny Hurley appreciates the opportunity UConn gave him, and will happy still making LOTS and LOTS of money, but maybe less (possibly a lot less) than what Kentucky can offer. Regardless of the recent success the Kentucky FB team has had, Kentucky will always be a basketball school. Kentucky basketball is one of the few jobs in all sports that gets romanticized. Kentucky is considered one of the few "elite" jobs for its respective sport.

When Kentucky is left with almost no roster because of NBA draft entries and 5* recruits following Cal or just leading, ground up rebuilding will be required.

If Drew ends up in the job, it'll be done by a national championship winning coach who is best friends with the Kentucky AD.

You gotta wonder what Scott Drew does with Calipari's resources at Kentucky. You also have to like that he's pretty plugged into the recruiting scene in the state of Texas...as well as knowing walking into a recruit's house with "Kentucky" on your shirt just means something different for CBB players.

Look at their records. I'd give Calipari the nod by a bit for overall success, but Drew and Calipari have the exact same amount of Natty's since Calipari has been at Kentucky. It's been over a decade since Cal won a Natty.
