There is enough in his coaching record to overlook a bad season. This year’s recruiting hurt. If his AD hated him, this year was a good enough excuse to fire him.

Do we have any shot at Mullen? Patenaude hasn't been terrible but I'd love to see what Mullen could do with Jeff Sims

Good for Mel Tucker...but Mich State fans better hope this season is a reflection of what's to come and not a one year wonder. That's a LOT of money to commit to a coach that's only been a HC for not even 3 years. Me personally, I'd like to see 2-3 years like the season Tucker and Mich State is having this year before committing that kind of money.

Of course, the B1G teams have the best media contract in college sports, so it's a lot easier to spend that kind of money. Still...

Wish GT had the opportunity for that B1G media money. Oh wait...

State also has at least one billionaire donor (Mat Ishbia, around $8billion in net worth) and several other very rich donors as well. Ishbia could straight up pay Tuckers yearly salary and it wouldn't make a dent in his worth. It isn't the media deal that's pushing it. If it was Illinois would and Purdue would be paying SEC salaries for their staff.

You are correct, Mich State donors have stepped up to make Mel Tucker's compensation one of the best in the country. However, Tucker was already well paid at $5.5 million/year.

Outside of the stratospheric salaries of the upper quarter of the SEC coaches, B1G coaching salaries are not too far off. Keep in mind, Lovie Smith was getting paid $5+ million a year before he got fired from Illinois.

Those two conferences have the highest paid coaches. Coincidentally, they are the two most valuable media contracts in college sports. The relationship isn't a coincidence.

Paul Johnson will never coach again unless he can get several guarantees in writing. These include but are not limited to sufficient funds to hire any coordinators and assistants he needs, a recruiting budget that is at the top of conference spending (whatever the conference) not the bottom, having an AD who has his back when other coaches try to manipulate rules, schedules, referees and by weeks. He probably wouldn’t mind having a team of 30 people to run, prepare and review film like they do at Alabama either.

I think he proved that the flexbone can hang with any team in the country and he is satisfied that if all the other factors are equal he can beat anybody. So he has nothing left to prove and would only take a job that was fun and had none of the headaches of Tech.
