GT in at #17 with three opponents above us and ND at #21

17. Georgia Tech: Quarterback Justin Thomas threw and ran for at least 1,000 yards each last season. The Yellow Jackets beat both Georgia and Mississippi State in a 32-day span. In the middle, they played Florida State off its feet in a two-point ACC title game loss. That was the difference in the Big 12 not getting in the CFP, which is a whole different argument. Coming off an 11-win season, Georgia Tech is an ACC not-so-dark horse. Pre-spring: 23

lol we moved up 6 spots without even playing a game. I'm not sure if we're top 10-15 team but it's funny how certain programs and conferences get the benefit of the doubt. If we were in the SEC and finished last season at #7, we would be in the top 10 and possibly the top 5 pre-season. If Oklahoma was coming off an 11 win season and an orange bowl win, they'd be one of the favorites to win it all.

What a joke. 9 SEC teams. Arkansas has won two conference games in the last two seasons and are in the top 25. Missouri lost to freaking Indiana last season and is ranked ahead of us. We smoked Mississippi State and they are ahead of us. Ridiculous.

Look there is no doubt an SEC bias and if you talk to Paul an agenda. No doubt in my mind. The SEC west got rocked in the bowls last year. No one is talking about that now and how overrated that division was. Instead its the opposite.

Great point. Here is how I would've ranked the top 8 SEC teams at the end of last year.

1. Alabama-Lost to Ohio State
2. Mississippi State-Dominated by Georgia Tech
3. Georgia-Loses to GT at home
4. Ole Miss-Absolutely embarrassed by TCU in the Peach bowl
5. Missouri-Lost to Inidiana at home
6. Auburn-Loses to Wisconsin in their bowl game
7. LSU-Loses to Notre Dame in their bowl game
8. Florida-Lost to FSU

So the top 8 SEC teams all lost out of conference games last season, with 7 of them losing those games in the last month of the season. Some of them losing in embarrassing fashion. But the narrative still has the SEC as the best conference in the country and better than ever. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done to change it. Obviously, on field results don't matter.

It's going to be the same joke of a story this year. They're gonna feast on easy OOC games early in the season, balloon up the rankings, and we're going to hear about how the SEC West is once again the best division in football. But for real this time. We promise.

It never ends.

LSU, lost to ND, and Ole Miss, embarassed by TCU, were Arky's only SEC wins. Their other wins were Nichols State, UAB, Texas Tech, N Ill, and Texas. Yet, Arky's a top 25 team post spring.

Didn't think about that. Arky beat the two teams with probably the two worst QB's in the SEC.

I actually think Tennessee has a chance to be pretty good. They are nasty at the skill positions on offense.

We need to put together two or more good seasons before the respect will come. Simple as that. At least we are in a position to play our way into the playoff, if we do prove to have a good team.

A strong season this year and the perspective of many will change. A seven or less win season and they will go back to their time worn criticisms.

Agreed....It is going to take the SEC not winning the NC a couple years in row for folks to quit drinking the SEC Kool aid

Do preseason polls even matter anymore?

Yes. Remember what happened in the SEC last season? Texas A&M beats "top 10" South Carolina in impressive fashion and catapults all the way to the top 10. Mississippi State beats "top 10" LSU and jumps into the top 10.

I'm sure we wouldn't get that kind of respect if we beat a top 15 Notre Dame in September.

They shouldn't, but they do. @CobbTech is correct - it certainly propped up much of the SEC last season, and no one seemed to acknowledge the error until they were exposed during the bowls.
It seems the BCS poll has simply been replaced by the the playoff committee poll. The fate of all these teams resides in the hands/opinions of a select few. Wack. The good news is the committee poll doesn't come out until, what, the 5th week? However, they're human and they'll be swayed by all the media hype and unofficial polling that goes on regardless.

Simple solution: No polls until week 5.
Problem: the abundance of "ESPN power rankings, SI rankings, B/R top 10s, every internet bloggers homemade polls" that inevitably create a narrative that there really are rankings even before they are official.

Just win, baby.

It takes more than just winning, ask FSU. They almost missed the playoff as the only undefeated which is ludicrous.
This. We're in a tough situation being in the ACC. We were 9-2 and no one thought we were any good until we beat UGA and Mississippi State.

Agreed to both. My point is that there's no getting around the bias. Even if they abolish preseason polls, the unofficial ones will become the de facto ones.
