With the Dodgers signing Blake Snell, does that mean there is one less suitor for Fried?
Unfortunately there are still several teams pursuing a top-line lefty, and now there is one less of those on the market. My guess is that Snell's deal drove up Fried's asking price. As to durability, Fried is a full year younger than Snell and has been able to make essentially the same number of starts as Snell in the past 4 seasons. He won't get Snell's deal due to not having anywhere near the swing and miss skill that Snell has, and also Fried has a QO attached to him. Fried could still go the Snell 2023 route and sign a short-term deal with an opt-out, thus avoiding the QO in the 2nd round of bidding next off-season, but he's gonna get paid quite handsomely.

$20.5M is quite handsome. Don't tell me you really want to stay in ATL and turn your nose up at that.
In context it's not. If you are comparing to society at large, $10M is quite handsome, but I'm guessing that if someone offered him a 5 yr/$50M contract that he and his agent would have trouble ever speaking to that team again.

Yanks reportedly make great impression on Fried. Tell me the guy really wanted to stay in ATL. If it works out, Max, please share your diary the first time your forearm tightens, you can’t spin a ball, and they start flying out of the cracker box field up there.

Some guy (Nightengale?) suggesting Fried will get north of $200mil, likely signing with NYY or BOS.

Plan B's?
I love Maximus, but that’s redonkulous! Max has had durability and forearm issues the last several years. Leave it to the Yankees to do something like this.

Sheeeeeesh ... let's go get the next Fried.

Not sure which is worse, the years or the money.

Funnily enough, I think the best thing that happened to the Yanks this offseason was losing out on Soto. Him alone would have probably maxed out their moves, and they have more than a corner OF need.

They really needed this signing. If I were Cashman, the next phone call is to Cody Bellinger to get that deal done, then to Alex Bergman and to the Cards to see what it could cost to get Arenado at third. Best price wins.

I’m really not sure what the Braves will do. A 4th outfielder would be great and I think Laurano will return, but that hasn’t come to fruition yet. I’d love to have done something at short, but the trade market doesn’t seem to be materializing there. It’s really hard to pick at the offense or defense as they both are very good. Maybe the change in hitting coach is really all that was needed?

My pipe dream move would be to trade some of our pitchers who need a change of scenery for Bo Bichette. As much as I like Joe Jimenez, I really wish we had Justyn-Henry Malloy back.

You can never have too much pitching and since we don’t seem to be signing a starter, AA needs to load up on the bullpen starting with Tanner Scott.

I get the impression that AA is stuck. I have no idea why, but he seems unable to pop the big contract. Is it his personal philosophy or a corporate leash? No idea.

He’s snagged guys like Donaldson, Melancon, Keuchel, etc. on short-term contracts. But he’s never entered a top-shelf long-term contract of, say, 5+ years. He’s gotten Albies, Acuna, Riley, Harris, Olson, Murphy, Strider, etc. all on team-friendly long-term contracts.

I feel like it's a personal philosophy. I think he is afraid of getting burned in the later years of a long contract. Ownership has been willing to open their pockets up within reason as the team's payroll has consistently gone up every year since 2016. The massive success of the Battery has also made ownership more willing to let AA spend money. Again, I think he is just more afraid of the backend of a long contract when a guy isn't worth the AAV. I applaud him for keeping the Braves in a really good place with long-term flexibility and short-term additions.

When you aren't the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Giants or any other big-market team or have an owner who is willing to write anything down on a check (Mets), you have to be judicious with your money. AA is extremely judicious with the Braves' money and it's beginning to frustrate the fans. The Ozuna contract is an exception and even his contract wasn't crazy.
