Shanahan was a flippin' sophomore. Jeez! You guys are unbelievable.
jeff sims was a sophomore at one point. our o line was made up of sophomores and freshman at one point. they were still harshly criticized as well. just par for the course for better or for worse 🤷‍♂️

Yep. And operated with a punt formation for the first 4 games that no one else in the country used. That couldn't have had anything to do with the blocked punts, nor could the 5 big-*** guys in his face have anything to do with his performance being "unpredictable."

Of course, most of us remember PH3, so many of our expectations may be a little high...

We remember PH3 his senior year. No one really remembers his early struggles.

He would be fine if he learned to get more height and less distance on his punts. He out kicks his coverage too often, which sets up big returns. Also needs to work on getting kicks off a bit faster and I'm surprised he doesn't seem to know how to do the rugby style kicks very well. The aussie punters seem good at that, but since he is the first Irish punter in NCAA and is relatively new to punting, maybe it is something he never worked on.

i think a lot of it was coaching cause how many of the big punt returns were line drives straight up the middle of the field? he either should have been told to start directional punting or we should have had our coverage set up better to handle a kick up the middle

just awful play all around by the whole unit for most of the season

Yes, he is a sophomore, but let's keep it real.

He is three to five yards closer to the defense than he should be when he kicks the ball because he takes too many steps, and his steps are too long. The defense is another five yards closer to him because it takes him an extra second to get the ball off than it should. Those eight to ten yards mean every punt has a good chance to get blocked. Are these correctable? Yes, but not so much that he will ever be a viable punter in my opinion.

How many punts were blocked after we went to a normal punt formation with 3 blockers?

Sure seems like a quality engr school would have the time and distance formulae for effectively optimizing variables of long snapper and punter.
