Belichick to keep G. Collins?

The more I think about it, Collins saying “Tech was a mess when I arrived and only I can fix it,” is such an obvious con we should have known better than to hire him. But at least the transition from Johnson to Key (with this crazy interim in between) proves that good coaches at Tech work hard, don’t do a lot of yapping, and produce modest to good results. Was the lesson worth the cost? Only if we never go for fool’s gold again. And only if Tech fans learn some humility and accept a good coach when we have one.
See your point, but after a decade a coach gets kinda stale. In our case, the coach fractured the fanbase and those that believed we gave up on football with the hire were never going to support the program while he was here. Johnson would have left about the same timeframe he did anyway I believe with probably the 3rd winningest percentage behind Dodd and Heisman. If we'd had funded the program, there would have been no chatter about a massive rebuild. We'd have transitioned to a flex offense with little or no hype, someone would have inherited a scoring machine and would have only had to deal with GT's main issue- finding enough defensive players, mostly stout DL, to give us a chance to win big.

Now we're in between. A sporadic O that sputters way too often, a D that can play well but does not have enough of the right pieces. When both are good, we look unbeatable. When both are bad we look like look like Wake.

Maybe i am reaching here, but IF there was a silver lining to the debacle, things got so bad that it drew the attention of the Prez. We are unaccustomed to involvement at the top of the organization. I keep thinking that if we had brought in another coach who continued winning in the 6-7 games a year category and going to minor bowls each year, then TStan would still be muddling along and the status quo that has been the GTAA since Rice left would have remained in effect.

That's a great point, I think it galvanized GT sports fans. Add that to a critical hire, a new President that doesn't look down his nose at scholar athletes because they were aided getting into GT because of their athletic talent. It's rare timing that any sport at GT benefits from a combination of events all lining up simultaneously.

Completely agree! Having the President on board is absolutely huge.

UNC will.owe him another $1M for 2025. He had a 2 year deal.
I call this money give away. I understand 2 year deals are the standard for coordinators , but I think UNC could have told Coach Collins one year deal - take it or leave it. The ADs at FSU and UNC are not exactly what I would call professional executives. They would never make it in the corporate world.

Mack Brown was on the hot seat this year. One reason was UNC’s defense. It’s not a surprise that a DC would get a two year deal. They overpaid for Collins, though

Now, now. He was Tech's coach and he was pretty bad. I thought he was a scam artist after I saw the posts from Temple fans who were absolutely ecstatic to see him go. But then I really wanted Paul to stay to see if he could benefit from the new funding he was getting. (He would have too.) I have a lot of hard feelings about Geoff. Oth, he's gone. That's enough fo me.

Yep. He had all the earmarks of a con artist from the get go. My professional “charlatan alerts” were all blinking bright red.

Then I did something I don’t usually do. I let all his supporters talk me out of my reservations about him. Early on his supporters easily outnumbered his detractors on this by a 3-1 margin, and any attempt to raise legitimate questions about his ability would (strangely) turn into attacks on Paul Johnson. To this day some on here disparage our former Hall of Fame Coach because of the constant smearing of him that happened while Collins was here. Collins was the most divisive and destructive presence on this program of any coach in my lifetime. We are still trying to get our attendance figures back to what they were before he spent 4 years turning fans against each other or against the program.

So, whenever I can get a laugh at his expense it is very healthy and therapeutic for me. It helps me get over all the nastiness and negativity he unleashed around here.

And losing.

That was what did it for me. I left at the half when we lost to Citadel in his first year. I was furious. As I left Grant (not Hyundai, Grant) Field I looked at a row of fans and yelled, "What would the score be now if Paul was still here? 28 - 0!" It would have been too. I kept my season tickets, but I didn't go to a lot of the games until Key got the job. Now I go as much as I can.

I never ever let my alerts stop blinking, but I did hope against hope that somehow the eternal optimists who love hearing blue sky stuff would be right about him.

He would have absolutely been the first person in my lifetime (almost 62 years) that had his personality and could actually produce tangible results (other than used car salesmen or any salesmen - what salesmen do is a talent, but it is not the main talent for being a successful HC).

Realistically, what good coordinator would go into a situation like that? Knowing Brown was at the end of the road.
