Bermuda dies when it freezes. You can remove all of the dead stuff every spring (dethatching) but some turf specialist don't recommend it as that process can lead to diseases. Also, when you remove the dead stuff through that mechanical process it usually removes most of the stems above ground that sprout the new growth. This can delay the greening up and thickening of the lawn/field. Aerating bermuda in the spring is also process that benefits bermuda greatly but I believe that the cost/benefits of various maintenance techniques on athletic fields shows that it better rip it all up every so often than take the risks of not having as good of a surface in September if you dethatch and aerate.
It needs to be trained to grow a thick, low mat. Reel type mowers, like used on golf courses, are best suited to accomplish this.This. My impression is that the movement for stadiums over the last few years has been away from artificial turf back towards grass. I love the sod. Hope we stick with it.
Have seen a couple of anecdotal reports about the field turf and health issues.... ingesting the rubber pellets / dust. I say keep the real stuff.
