Also, once many recruits are identified as BCS level Recruits, they only care about scoring enough to get their scholly, from their viewpoint, their is no change in their Fin. aid package because once they get the scholly, they get the same package as an Andrew Luck that was a 4.0 Valedictorian.
Which means there are kids admitted to college who have absolutely zero interest in the very purpose of college. Imo, there is something very disturbing about that. It gives credence to the quote from a college professor I recently read that stated "these kids are majoring in eligibility." That is a farce.

You're wrong on this. I've seen it expressed in no uncertain terms on this board and others many times.

Let me be clear on this. I don't advocate for this in no way shape and form matter of fact I like/love the current admission requirements. They are student athletes.

I wasn't referring to you. If I can find the exact quote(s) I'll post it, but that would take a lot of looking and I don't have the time or inclination.

These players are no different than the millions of HS grads that go to JUCOs and community colleges that didn't take HS seriously and just don't know what they want to do with their life.

The problem that CFB have is that everything they do is captured by the Media.

Not too long ago before the Hope Scholly went on-line, the avg. SAT at Kennesaw St. was about 880 on the 2-part SAT, but when BCS level recruits score that, it become newsworthy for the Nat'l Media to make an issue of it.

It is not the Recruits fault that the schools that invest the most in big-time sports are not at the community college level academically.

No one cares that millions of HS grads are at the community college level academically, we only seem to care about the 3,000 or so that are talented enough to play big time sports and get those schollies each yr out of HS.

The difference between the players in question and the typical CC student is that your typical CC student is serious about academics and how it impacts their future. Also, I don't agree that the players in questions function on a CC level and I doubt most would get into and/or even try to get into one w/o football.

dressedcheese: You just quoted and article from 2009. Let's give the newer coach, Fisher, sometime to straighten out some of these problems. The situation in 2009 was not his problem, even though he was set to become the coach. Who knows, maybe he even tried to get some of them solved before he became the Head Coach. I am willing to monitor the situation to see how he fares with those kinds of problems. I assure you, the spotlight will be on him and FSU after the success this year. The SEC will be looking at every angle they can come up with to hold against FSU. If some prove valid, then they should be judged on the valid proven issues.

Fair enough, but the first article I linked to was this year. Like you, I hope it's not happening, but you know what they say about a zebra changing his stripes.... Also, it's not just them, I think it's just the tip of the iceberg. What bothers me is no news about the NCAA making inquiries after the story broke. At least they could have come out and said we looked into it and found nothing or we don't find any reason to look into it. Heck, not even a published response on FSU's part.

ATl1: The athletes receive the best education, meals, housing, medical, etal, free of charge. They are getting more than there share for playing football or any other sport. Since, you mentioned minorities, there are also white guys playing and not receiving any additional monies. Also, there are many minorities having to pay their own way or scramble for other scholarships to get an education. The football players are enjoying the greatest of the advantages. I say lets kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Pay the athletes, and then all the schools go broke, then the athletes have no where to go to get an eductation or to show their talents. I say BS to athletes getting paid for playing; they are already in the elite portion of students getting a free meal. I don't watch or support any pro teams. I will definitely drop college teams if they ever start paying them to play.

dressedcheese: Maybe, they are still investigating it, I hope so. I agree, the NCAA Infraction's Committee does a horrible job on enforcements. They tend to look the other way on the factories and try to prove their effectiveness by hamstringing the innocent. It reminds me of the socialistic Democrats; they take from the workers to give to the non-workers; same problem.

I agree, but think a moderate stipend is not unreasonable. Heck, I got a small stipend with my ROTC scholly.

I appreciate your sentiment but one thing I can't stand is political references creeping into football talk.

I thought Stanford coach David Shaw had a real interesting comment on this a month or so back:
"We're a college. It's our job to prepare these kids to make a living, not to provide them a living." He was talking about why colleges shouldn't provide additional financial aid to student-athletes, but it got me to thinking; if some of these kids really aren't making it financially while in school, then why not help them with some additional life training? I think there should be a fund dispensed at the conference or NCAA level, where the S-A has to prepare "proof of income/expense" forms, similar to tax forms, to show that there is an actual shortage of income. Then, the S-A should have to file expense reports w receipts for the purchases he makes while accepting this aid. What better way to prepare a college student for real life than with stacks of tedious paperwork? ;). I kid about that part, but there is a middle ground that can be found here...

While in Grad School, students are earning a stipend, sometimes as much as $2500/month. This is justified because they are paid through the funding of their research. I see no issue with a small monthly stipend in addition to the other benefits. It's not like they could get another part-time job.

Good points. Many non-athletes have had to pay their own way and couldn't afford to "go out pizza". Having all the meals paid for would be a big deal to most students paying their own way through school. I know it would have been for me! Same with books, tutors and the like.

If they are that bad off, they can file for food stamps, sell them on the black market and then have spending money.
