another optimistic rant for those losing hope...

I made some relevant comments about Zack in the VT post-game thread. We are also down several TE's, which has more than a slight impact in Buster's offense.
We were really down at TE at the UNC game. At VT, we used Boyd and Hawes who were the 1st and 2nd string guys in the first game. Siether, who probably would have been 1st, was lost for the season in summer camp.

IMO the OL is as good or maybe a little better in pass protect this year. They have done a good job avoiding sacks.
Sort of the same reason as TOs though - we simply aren’t going downfield much, so there’s not a ton of time defenses to get sacks.

I think a lot of us were expecting a better performance out of the offensive line, quarterback, running backs and wide receivers than we have seen thus far in 2024. This was refortified by the FSU performance and how we were able to control the line of scrimmage and make plays against what we thought was a top 10 football team. As we found out later FSU was a paper tiger so instead of validating our expectations, we should have been more realistic that what we were observing was a good performance against a bad football team. In other words, we had discovered fool's gold.

King has been off all season. My observation that he has not displayed much joy is playing the game this season and whatever is bothering him finally led to his inability to perform at all mid-season. Pyron was not able to sustain the expectations we had for him as a backup so now we are left to wonder who will salvage our QB situation. The most important player on any football team. Jamal has given us everything he has but he just has not been able to stand up to the punishment and lack of running lanes. We have had a sustained series of injuries to the backups, and we might end up in the same boat as we are in at QB at RB. The wide receiver talent has been underutilized, probably due to the limitations at QB, but also just a lack of quality performance on their part. I don't know what has happened to Leo Blackburn, but he has not produced any measurable contribution so far. Many of our other receivers seem to be unable to get open or make clutch plays when we have to have them.

The defense is showing marginal improvement, but we are still unable to generate a pass rush, our defensive backs are still not able to provide quality coverage, and we are thin at linebacker and scrambling to field competent talent at that position. I think our coaching is moving us in a better direction, but we need better talent and quicker development of the players we have in house.

It will be a challenge to get one more win this season. It is possible but it will take a special effort. I hope out players and coaches find a way to make it happen.

Go Jackets!

Leo Blackburn? Yet again? Seriously?
Really. It’s insane that he gets mentioned. One catch this year. Five last year and people act like he is a difference maker. Injuries derailed his career. Very unfortunate but god lord get a grip. He is not a savior.

I did one of these after the UL loss. I feel like with all the negativity in here (and I'm not saying it's wrong to be mad, we played poorly.) I need to vent and give y'all some hope and optimism.

First off, let's just imagine the worst case scenario. King doesn't come back, we lose the last three, go 5-7 and miss the bowl game. Would that suck? Yes. (it would be 2017 all over again) But one must consider that the preseason expectation for this team from the pundits was 5 wins. With King and Jamal having a chance to come back next year (I say a chance because you never know with the portal.) and Petty for the moment still committed, 2025 looks like it could be a very fun season.

AND as for this season, with the bye week to rest, watch film and recover, there's a good chance King and Efford heal up. Last time we had a bye week it allowed Jamal to get back to 100%, and look how he played vs Duke and UNC. And even if King doesn't play, people in here forget that Key beat Drake Maye's UNC team in 2022 with ZACH GIBSON as his starting guy. Miami will be tough no matter what, but they're beatable, we just would need to play mistake free ball. NC State should be winnable as well, they don't have an offense and it's a Thursday nighter.

Does the losing streak suck? Yes. But the season is NOT over. Also, shootyhoops starts in less than 10 days. If you are free Wednesday 11/6 come on down to McCamish for the opener
It is not over until its over, a famous philosopher once said. Of course, this "rant" overlooks the fact that this is not a good team or even an average team. Tech is mediocre as befitting a middle of the pack or lower ACC team. IIWII

My biggest shock has been the performance of the OL. By the end of last year, they were executing with precision and power, pushing around some very talented fronts. This year, I’ve seen some pretty egregious whiffs that have cost us drives. The only new starter should be Rutledge. How did an OL returning 4/5 starters manage to regress so much?

With the WR regression, I’m disappointed, but that can be chalked up to a change in coaching staff. I simply can’t explain any of the other position groups on offense getting worse. Coach Key has some tough decisions ahead of him in the offseason.
Want to improve this team? Improve the lines...both of them.

The thing about the injuries is that it appears we have a larger amount than most teams. I wonder if Key’s toughness is taken too far in practices and our guys are getting beat up there too much. I mean we all see how much we run Haynes and King, now imagine Fall camp and twice weekly during season of full pads working with tough physical practices will take their toll. I hope most of the guys are healed up for Miami cause I do believe we can give them a game.

I might be wrong, but it looked like Pyron was either still banged up from the ND game, or sick on Saturday. If so, we had a hampered 2nd string QB, and a true freshman who probably doesn't know the entire playbook. At RB, we weren't down 1 RB. At one point in the game we only had two RBs available. The 3rd or 4th string guy at the beginning of the season, and a walk-on. At LB we are only down one player, but the defense was pretty stout on Saturday. The defense held VT to 233 total offensive yards. That should be good enough to win. QB and RB are the positions that are hurting the team at the moment, and they are not down 1 player. QB 1 is out, and QB 2 is sick/injured I believe. RB 1 is sick/injured. RB 2 is out. RB 3 is out. RB 4 is playing. RB 5 is out.
Bec careful @RonJohn , y 4 ou're likely confusing too many folks with facts!

Love Jamal but he is small and it doesn't take a lot to get him to the ground. Our old B backs would have withstood running into the back of one of our linemen, like Saturday, and he is victim to a number of ankle tackles. Don't know if I would trade him for any other RB in the ACC, with the exception of Hampton, though.

The oddsmakers had us going 5-7 at best. Beat N.C. State, and it's 6-6 and a bowl game. After three and a half years of the journey through the wasteland, I'll take back to back 6-6 and back to back bowls. Frankly, this team really isn't that good. We're not particularly deep anywhere. But - at least we're on a better path than two and a half years ago.
At least now we go into games expecting to have a chance. Back then, I just wondered if we could keep it within 30. That's how bad it had gotten.
This was the conversation every Saturday.
Me: Dude, they are going to beat our ###.
Bud: What makes you say that?
Me: Have you seen us play? Have you seen the level of our coaching? We are going to get the #### beat out of us.

Now?
Other than Notre Dame (and I'll admit, just before kickoff with FSU, because as I watched them take the field, they just looked like NFL guys compared to our team. They passed the eyeball test. But that's all they've passed), we haven't been physically overmatched this year. VPI was solid on defense but other than that, I came away thinking how overrated Drones was. I thought we were going to have Woody Dantzler flashbacks, given how hyped he had been, but had nothing of the sort.
We were lucky to be 6-6 last year (thank you, Mario Cristobal). Now we can get 6-6 and next year, maybe start climbing up the win ladder. Got to get better in a lot of areas, but it is doable, as my old calculus professor used to say.

Rebuilding the utter travesty the previous guy left in his wake (before his hair transplant) ain't gonna be fixed quickly. Patience.

Lose hope? Not even close.

I lived a Tech life going to seasons of 4-6-1, 1-9-1, 1-10, and 6-5. Sometimes, simply fielding a competitive team is a major accomplishment. After decades of abject neglect, the Hill is finally taking steps and investing in the Program ... new facilities, new hires at AD and HC, and more student enthusiasm than I've seen in a long, long time.

I'm not discouraged at all. It is said that it takes 25 miles of ocean to turn a battleship around and head in the other direction. A ship loses a quarter of its speed in the first quarter-turn; a further loss of speed to 55-60% in the next. Only in the third quarter-turn does it begin to run steady again. I think that's a good analogy to a college football team. If next year we are looking at 6-6 or 7-5 ... we should be pleased.

When everyone is healthy, I like this team and think they are pretty good. Not great, but good. Good enough for 8-4, for sure.
Totally agree, however, nobody stays healthy and we are not that program that gets to stack depth. I fear the poaching will make next year closer to 4-8

It’s been a very good year when we’ve been healthy. Even with the team being beat up these last 2 games the team was out there trying their best to win. Brent Key hasn’t had time to build the team yet to where if we do have an injury the next man up can step in and not see a big time drop off. Things are good but things haven’t gone our way this year the injuries happened when we were playing teams we had a good chance to beat and that’s just the way it goes. They’ve been very competitive this year even with the injuries. Hopefully #10 and #44 get back for the NC State game because that’s the game we have the best shot getting that 6th win. I’m proud of the effort I’ve been seeing these last 2 games win or lose.

Put the fear behind you. Don’t fret the future. We don’t know what will happen. It may be bad or it may be good. Life is too short.
Well according to the AJC article....at least one recruit says we Bamboozled him...that can't be good
