I think the analysis below may shed some light on our current conversation concerning the ACC versus the SEC. This is a pretty detailed summary covering the last 25 years. This shows each SEC team's record against all conferences including the ACC. This even goes so far as to cover every game during this period starting in 1998.

Without going into a lot of detail, the ACC has won 101 times out of 240 games against the SEC which is 42%. Not too bad. However, I believe the issue comes down to the ACC record against the SEC's top teams. The ACC teams do pretty well against the bottom half of the SEC teams, but the ACC doesn't do very well against the top 7 or 8 shown on the spreadsheet. Scroll down to see detail showing every team's record.

I went back and looked at the data a little more closely...

In that time period, uga was 20-6 against us. they're 32-7 against the ACC. Only 13 of those 39 games were against equal or better competition by their metrics.
Alabama is 12-3 (7 games against lesser competition) and LSU is 10-3 (5 games against lesser competition).

Alabama, uga, and LSU have been nationally contending factory schools and make the difference between the two conferences, especially the uga/GT match up (+14). Take those three outlier teams out of the discussion and the record is 86-88 in ACC favor.

Hell, leave LSU in and it's 96-91, which is pretty damn even. So, yeah, the straight numbers don't tell the story.

Just take uga/GT out and it's 121-95

So, although it shows the SEC is a stronger conference than the ACC, it's not by that much. 6 of the SEC teams have losing records against the ACC,

I completely agree, just remove the data you don’t like.

What I hate most about this entire thread is that I absolutely detest everything about the SEC and I root against them on every occassion. I guess it’s the Tech person in me that has to be contrarian to opinions I think are misguided. Sorry about this fellas. It’s innate.

I didn't remove any data.

I showed that the main difference is GT not holding up its side of the bargain in the rivalry and that outside of three perennial powerhouse programs (with 13 and 15 games against the ACC over the period of time evaluated), the rest of the conference is pretty much equal. But, don't let that get in the way of your narrative.

I agree about the SEC and your take. Alabama, LSU, and uga (and Tennessee to an extent) get it done on the field in crunch time against lesser teams. We don't do that enough. I think that is the biggest difference in the conferences.

I feel like some people don’t like nuance. Most of us agree that the SEC usually (not always) has 2 or 3 good teams. Most of us agree that some years (not all years) they are the strongest conference. But what many of us don’t buy is that idea that they are always head and shoulders better than every other conference.

I think the expanded playoff is doing wonders for recalibrating everyone’s assessment of the SEC so that it is closer to reality. I did note during the broadcast of the ND / Uga game that the announcers tried a couple of times as the game was slipping away from Georgia to say this was not a typical uga team and were not as strong as previous years. No, what was different was uga having a more difficult schedule than is typical of them plus drawing a tough playoff opponent. A few more years of playoffs and we might get back to talking about individual teams and matchups rather than talking about a strong SEC team as if they represent the entire Confederacy in some kind of “chip on the shoulders” replay of the Civil War. So tiresome.

sec is 7-6 in bowls. it just matters more.
The SEC basically only has 1 team with good bowl wins. Texas over Clemson and Arizona State.

And those were probably 2 of the 4 weakest teams in the CFP, with ASU almost certainly the weakest.
