Academic Requirements for Recruits

Have the academic requirements for recruits to be granted admission been reduced under CGC? We are certainly in on more high profile recruits this cycle than at any time in recent history. I know there was always talk of certain exceptions, and know 2 high major recruits that were granted exceptions under CPJ. This is not a CPJ vs CGC argument. I’m just curious if the Hill is allowing CGC to chase after whomever he thinks can handle the academic challenge despite their scores or transcript. Or is this just a cycle that has many highly rated recruits that meet the academic expectations?

I am not aware of anything that has changed. It could be that it never was academics that kept us from getting high profile recruits. Its just something Tech fans have always believed and clung to, even when former players tell us it is overblown as a supposed huge obstacle.

Curriculum, too.

Former players may not be the best information, since they got in. But doesn't Georgia Tech have about the top football SAT score average among public institutions? There has to be a reason for that beyond happenstance, seems to me. I never could get a clear answer when I asked about specific guidelines, but there has to be a general idea that bottom qualifiers are not getting admitted. I notice that our current crop of recruits seems to be pretty accomplished as a group academically.

Certainly, there is a small percentage of guys that we just cant take. But the point is, there are more than enough that we can. Curriculum can be a problem if a guy has a very specific major in mind that we dont have, but this isnt the most common scenario, either.

Something else to keep in mind is that powerhouse high school programs that turn out a lot of D1 talent are much more on top of academics now. It is part of the total package.

Hopefully they will get lowered, altered, enhanced, changed, more versatile to allow us to compete better if that is what it takes.

There has been a lot more versatility added to the academic side of GT in the last 50 to 40 years.

Too much at stake for the entire school not to broaden our horizons.

No. This is what happens when you have a staff focused on recruiting. The academic side is more about keeping player eligible than getting admitted. I've personally known some SAs who got into GT that were dumb as a sack of rocks. The key thing is that they were willing to work on their academics and so it's not surprising with the academic support that they managed to stay eligible. In issue with recruiting is more about whether the recruits want to deal with it than them being able to get in (or with the right motivation being able to do the work).

So don’t “lower” (such a convenient term) the requirements for, let us say, 25 kids, who may very well graduate due to their heart as well as their brain and by doing so raise the stature / profile of the entire university, increase the number of great applicants and raise more money for the school.

Yep, the most “Tech” thing ever.

Paul convinced the Hill to let him have a good number of "exceptions" for recruits. I'm guessing that Geoff got the same deal or, perhaps, a few more. No doubt some of our present recruits came in under that.

Problem = it took awhile and a good record with both progress to graduation and, you know, actual graduation to get the exceptions. One of Tech's difficulties is that a good record on the field + a poor record for progress/graduation = the exceptions get withdrawn. No one should be operating here under the delusion that we can have the same kind of lienience toward academic performance that, say, UNC or da U have. If we don't keep the same standards going forward, the exceptions will be withdrawn. And TStan won't do a thing about it; the academics come first.

This is a simple fact of how the place works. Get used to it.

I would love to know how this works. Who decides the number of exceptions. I assume it is not the board of regents. It is not the AA. So is it someone on the hill that decides? I really do want to know what the process is to define the number of exceptions.

I know it is not the coaching staff.

I think the top hs programs are doing better now with promising players, but it has to happen very early (say 7th/8th grade) to help the situation at Tech. The hard cold facts are: For the demographic making up the vast majority of recruits, the academic nos. are truly dismal. Hence, there are more than a small percentage of guys that we can't or shouldn't take. The anecdotal stories about former players etc. doesn't match documented realities like grad rates and test scores, even at the hs level. The one saving grace is, Tech isn't the ruthless killer of hard working kids that it used to be.

So in watching the games yesterday, I remember the scholar players of the ACCCG. Clemson was and Ag-Econ major and UVA was an Education major........I would bet the LSU and UGA guys were similar. I think there are some guys we can get but based on what I have been told, by actual grads, the football players have to take and pass many of the same core classes as the rest of the school, and I promise you, the vast majority of the players at MBS yesterday could not do that.

There is essentially not one kid of the 85 that gets into tech on his own. Ok. Get over it. Maybe 1 at best.

Every single one. Is a hired hand. Every. Single. One

Who cares. Move on
