I agree but that wasn't always the case with ND back in the day. Also DWAG fans would have liked nothing better than to trounce us last year after we upset them in Athens the year before. Kirby put the brakes on in the 4th quarter last year.

Well, they also had the SECCG the next week and hopes for the CFP ... it may very well have been the importance of those rather than good will.

Greatest football game I've ever seen. Still.

I got this beat: I was there for the 3-3 win over Notre Dame AND the 7-6 win over number 1 Alabama in 1962 which Dodd called his greatest win. In both instances, the Jackets were helped by opposing quarterbacks having an off day and by combining a superior kicking game with conservative mistake free football. We should have won the game against Notre Dame they just did not have it that day which was strange for a team that was ranked number 1 going into the contest. Maybe they were over rated which as we all know just about never happens with the Irish.

A similar situation occurred in 1990 when we tied Virginia Tech who was not all that great that year. It was windy and cold which seemed to affect Shawn Jones passing. Someone correct me but it may have been the week after the huge win over Virginia. Offensively we just were flat and did not execute which is why a great defense is absolutely essential for anyone having national title or conference championship asperations. Offense will click and look unstoppable one week and then for no apparent reason will fall apart, usually against inferior competition, which can blow up a national title drive.

I was also there for all 3 of those games you mentioned. The '62 Bama game is the most exciting, most intense, most gratifying game I have ever attended.

I read about Dodd's win over Alabama. Supposedly, Bear Bryant was staying at the Georgian Terrace Hotel having arrived before the game and it started to rain. Allegedly, he told his coaching staff that Dodd was so damn lucky, that Alabama would lose. They did.

I was not there but watched it on TV. Afterwards my mother in law (God rest her soul) was a big Auburn fan said she was surprised at my intensity because Tech fans are supposed to be cool, arrogant, condescending, etc. I told her that I used to worse far worse but getting married and raising a family had calmed me down...for a while. I would guess that the Charlottesville game, the Alabama game, and the Notre Dame tie are in my top five of games I have watched not necessarily attended. Last two spots would go to the Jasper Sanks Georgia game and maybe the FSU game from 2008 or 2009 (the one that was rain delayed and went back and forth with ridiculously easy scores on offense for both teams) A lot of this has to do with at what stage in life you are in. Games that were exciting when you are a child or teenager tend to get magnified over the years. It takes a lot for me to get really pumped up now but generally speaking beating UGA, Clemson, or Miami will pretty much do it.

Yep. he had invited Kim King and his parents to visit him and according to the "young left hander" the Bear was nervous about the weather and chain smoked Chesterfields one after another while complaining "this is Dodd's weather, he will figure out a way to turn this to his advantage" So he did.

Yep. "Sometimers" got me again. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don't. I have seen a replay of the Virginia Tech game and was surprised at how poorly our offense played.

Yes, that 1962 Tech team was pretty bad at times on offense, although Dodd later said the line was one of his better ones. I am pretty sure the colleges still had either one platoon or some kind of limited substitution. Seems like they had "defensive specialists" but only a limited number of some kind.

I remember how vile and nasty the UGA fans were when Richt was struggling. I guess I was pretty naive to think that we wouldn’t act the same way.
