Bit more on KirVonte -
My understanding is that the GT medical staff will not "release" him for play until January, basically a year after surgery, even though his surgeon has released him to therapy and allowed to work out. He was given an option to burn a redshirt this year, or to come in January and not have to burn the redshirt.
Smart decision was made to come in January.

He is busting his rear to prepare physically and he plans to take classes locally (KSU Marietta campus - formally SPSU) this fall.

I will put the above in the recruiting 2015 Thread regarding KB.

Well yeah. No point in sitting on scholly money for no reason. Don't we typically give the "extra" ships to sr walkons? What if the underclassman "temporary scholly" walkon earns it on the field, do you still pull it to add to the next class? What would you consider earning it?

Yes. Paul has done that before. Given a non senior walkon a ship for one year then taking him off the next year. common in the ncaa and the coaches are honest up front. Now if the guy ends up earning after that then fine, but the walkons are told it may only be for one year. Thats gravy to them. They love having a chance.

Imo the remaining ships go to the walkons that will play the most. So willis and whoever the next guy is??? Maybe rodwell if he is not on ship or whoever.

I still am holding out for a one year grad transfer at bb but doubt there is any shot of it.

That stinks for Kirvonte. I really liked his film. I like his game plan to get back though. Much better off to give an ACL full year to heal.

I believe PJ's policy is if you are walk-on that earns a spot on the two deep, you are rewarded with a scholarship. I would think that Willis would be one of our top 4 AB's.

this. I can't imagine CPJ giving a kid a scholly, the kid makes the 2 deep, then CPJ pulls the ship. He'd never do that.

Now I can see a kid given a ship, the kid maybe sees the field in mop up only or never sees the field, then gets it pulled.

When did we start greyshirting players? This sounds like a new occurrence to me.

I always believed CPJ was always above all of this. I hope this is still true and nothing shady is occurring.

It depends on what the meaning of the word "gray shirt" is. In this case, it means a decision to delay enrollment until Spring was reached by both GT (CPJ) and the player. And, the reason for delay has benefit for the player. In the "bad" sense of gray shirting, it is a decision the coach makes in order to not exceed scholarships and the player has no part of the decision. It seems some journalist like to stick that term to CPJ so it appears he is doing something underhanded and devious when, obviously, he is not.

Seems like the kid was given the option rather than be told to grayshirt. Especially with Benson, it works out well. He doesn't have to burn his redshirt for a season in which he probably wouldn't have played any way.

This is a calculated move by KirVonte and CPJ to maximize his eligibility. Nothing like a greyshirt - KB can come to GT in Fall if he wants to, but it'll burn his redshirt year. Or he can train outside of school, come in January and have 5 years starting in 2016, rather than 2015.

There's no point in coming in if he physically cannot play. If he was a Gurley type, it might make sense because he'd reach the NFL quicker, but I don't think he's planning on a 3 and out.

Completely UNSHADY. A creative solution for both the kid and the Institute. We are merely rolling into the 21st century. I think this situation and the Patrick Skov plan is a strong indication that CPJ is all in now, using every means at his disposal to push us to even greater heights. And I am not talking about "everybody does it so we will, too." I mean he's opening up the playbook for legitimate, acceptable, and honorable moves that help us get the quality and quantity of athletes we need to compete.

This helps KB if he wants to finish his masters under scholarship.
This helps with ABack separation.
This helps KB heal completely without wasting a year in which he cannot play and would not have learned much about his position.

As long as KB had a say, I think it is very good all the way around.

Well it's certainly not the latter, as we have enough open scholarships to take on both Benson and Ratliffe

The NFL rule is 3 years from high school graduation, so he can apply for the draft as soon as he meets the league requirement. Greyshirt, redshirt, prep school; or reform school/penitentiary in the case of SEC recruits doesn't effect the 3 year rule.
