Even if we assume that Freeman didn’t out coach Kirby here tactically, Freeman created chaos and Kirby lost his **** and his defensive player couldn’t maintain his composure leading to a clear offside.Freeman stated that the purpose of the mass substitution was to get Kirby to burn a precious TO. Kirby stated he knew this was what ND wanted and chose not to. You could say he made a poor decision there, but that's not the same as getting outcoached. The offsides penalty was not part of either coach’s plan.
It’s not clear to me that Freeman “outcoached” Kirby here although it appeared that way in hindsight due to the offsides penalty and subsequent first down.
Even if Freeman didn’t do anything special, Kirby displayed poor coaching, both personally and in preparing his players.
Freeman out coached Kirby by at least being average at a time Kirby was incompetent.
