Are refs directed to "let fumbles play out"? Or is this a theory about how refs handle such situations?
I’ve never seen anything written, but I’ve heard in the NFL or some of the conferences guidance from the heads of officials to wait to blow the play dead, increased emphasis on targeting, etc. It changes from season to season, based on containing injuries or other factors.
I think they are holding off on blowing a play dead to see if it’s a fumble this year, partially because of instant replay. (Just going off of memory, so could be wrong)
There’s a lot of guidance and coaching on when to call holding or other penalties.
