True..Big difference in only getting a tryout. It's not easy to change positions and compete with guys that have been playing a position since they were in middle school. Technique is everything in the NFL. I wish him luck but imo he would probably be a better fit for the CFL. It says quite a bit when no one will take the chance and sign you to a contract as a UDFA.

UDFA's still have to make the team so in reality, it's not much different than a tryout.

It isn't a big difference. Everyone needs to make the active roster to actually be an NFL player. Each team will cut from 90 to 53 during preseason. There are no real NFL salaries until the regular season.

A few UDFAs get a decent signing bonus but it is only a few.

The Falcons did not offer Davis a contract as an undrafted free agent after he was not selected in this weekend’s NFL draft. Rather, they wanted him to come to their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, Davis said, meaning that he would have to impress the team’s decision makers enough to actually earn a spot on the roster.

Also, the Falcons wanted him to work out as a fullback, a position that the team’s contingent, including coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, had him try at Tech’s pro day in March.

The Jaguars, meawhile, were among teams offering him a contract as an undrafted free agent as a linebacker.

Davis said he appreciated the Falcons’ offer, “but a free-agent deal is better than an invite to minicamp.” Further, he said, he wanted to play linebacker, where he led the Yellow Jackets in tackles for two of the past three years.

Not really...UDFA are under contract and know they will be there (for the most part) through camp with a chance of making the final 53 or PS. Trying out is pretty much another pro day for. Many of these tryouts are more of who your agent knows rather than team needs. Could he get a contract? sure, but they pretty much already know what JT brings to the table. Same thing last year with Golden.

Are you sure you are not referring to a "work out." Teams invite prospects to work out for them before the draft to get an up close and personal look and get their own measurements. A "try out" as I understand it is a camp invite. They go through the same cut/advance process as the paid players.

Probably similar to the MLS Allocation list they have for players coming from overseas.

To be specific, it is an invitation to rookie mini camp, which is usually 3 days. It isn't just a work out. It is training camp for all of the rookies.

It is how Malcolm Butler made the Patriots roster as a rookie.

It is better to have an UDFA contract ahead of time but, depending on the team, about 2-4 tryout guys make the 90 man roster. With a totally new regime in SF, no one can predict their likelihood to sign multiple try out guys. Teams cut and sign UDFAs throughout the preseason. There is a lot of movement.
