We'd need to adjust for schedule for the raw metric comparisons to be truly meaningful.

Adjusted for schedule, it's no longer the raw metric, fwiw.

Whenever, you use raw stats, you must ask whether you can live with the relative ambiguities. In this case, while sos may be an issue, at least he's comparing apples to apples in basic offensive style, drives/game etc.

IMO, the 2014 schedule was more difficult than 2009. We played 6 opponents who were ranked at the end of the 2014 season, 4 in 2014. We were ranked as high as 7 in 2009 though.

I'll let someone else make quantifiable comparison, but I agree. The edge in strength of schedule goes 2014.

In 2009 we played a true cupcake to start. The rest of our OOC was Miss State, GA and Vandy. We got both Clemson and FSU in the regular season. Then Clemson (again) in the Championship game.

The 2014 version of FSU, Miss State and Duke were better than their respective 2009 versions while the others (uGA, Clemson, Miami) were essentially similar. To balance that, I believe Iowa in 2009 was a very good football team.

Tevin's '11 offense is another good one for comparison. They played one less game, however, so raw stats cannot be compared directly. What can be compared are the averages, however. Interestingly, the '11 offense, which lacked the star power of either of the above offenses, had a higher yard/play (6.75) than either.

biggest surprise to me is 4th down conversion pct. if asked, many people might think we were better at 4th down with nesbitt under center.

Yes, I agree on all points. Should have been more clear.

Thanks @dressedcheeseside I think the 2014 team was a bit better offensively than the 2009 team. I loved both.

The JHowell SOS for GT in 2009 (all games including bowl) was a bit harder at .753 http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cf2009.htm than the .735 http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cf2014.htm for the 2014 team. To make a truly meaningful comparison, you'd have to get the SOS for O, D and ST for each team and compare that .... ain't worth the effort IMHO.

Both team were money in the red zone. '09 perhaps more so of the QB and RBs as individual talents, '14 more so because of the Oline.

Not to take anything away from either.

The numbers, when compared to 2009. We were a good offense then, but pretty much, a historically great offense last season. I had never looked at the stat comparison like that before against our last 11 win season.

Yup, I remember reading that Football Outsiders had our Offensive FEI at the highest for any team since they started doing stats. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feioff

No bad since the HS offense has to play the big boys.

We all know the offense has not been the problem. The D is what is holding us back. Last 5 games of 2014 seem to be the light at the end of the tunnel on D. Improved DC, some great potential red shirted and some great potential recruited D players. If the turn overs were made last year, which most were IMHO, and it is due to coaching and aggressiveness 2014 should be another great year. I see an up tick in depth, OBs waiting in the wings, just a good foundation building.

As always injuries can play a big part of holding a team back. But our S & C seems to be getting the right things done. 2015 will hopefully confirm this.

Also in college academics have a negative effect. But it seems the stars are aligning under CPJ and CTR.

I hope we have good weather for this years spring game. Can hardly wait to see the newer and under the radar guys.

Go Jackets!! THWG
