Balanced scoring. Liked seeing DO affecting shots near the rim and thought Souare even gave us some surprisingly high-energy productive minutes on the boards. Hard to take much from this game but I saw some really promising tenacious defensive possessions. We need to bring that all game long, every game though. Baye’s post game feels a little off to start the season. Didn’t folks point out that his weight drastically changed this offseason?

Just got back from the game:
Really dominated the middle of the game, then let off the intensity the last 10 minutes.

45 is going to be really good. Didn’t really get to see his 3 point range and he missed pretty badly on his shots, but he is active as far as shot blocking and willing to scrum for the ball. I’m used to seeing big men come in and look like awkward ducklings for the first two years, so his prowess is a good sign. Don’t know how he will fare in ACC play but he should be good to spell Baye and occasionally play with him to make a “big” lineup.

We started to do it towards the end but we really need to get more minutes with McCollum and Terry playing point. George can’t play 40 minutes.

Reeves is trying to find his three shot, but I felt like he is too quick to throw them up. He’s really our dynamic swing forward and we need him making things happen towards the basket to draw the defense. We have enough shooters but not enough guys that can make things happen off the dribble.

Sad not to see Sutton, O’Brien, or Mustaf. But good to get some extended minutes for souare and Onwuchekwa(whom I will now call Onwu to stop looking it up). Souare needs to be the energy, long defender, rebound machine to get minutes.

We missed Terrys shot last season. Still not there laterally speed wise on defense but his hands are active and he still can stroke a 3.

Hopefully get fully healthy and beat the dwags Friday

He just seems to be out of sync to me as well. In the first game I wondered if his role in the offense had changed significantly and he was unsure where his touches were going to come from.

But in general the team as a whole does not seem to be meshing yet.

For sure, this site became more enjoyable for me when I began committing to the use of the Ignore button. Ignoring those fonts and not caring about their opinion any longer.

I'm not suggesting that I do not appreciate others opinions or those that differ from mine, but there's a section that only comes out after losses. Either the sky is falling or our coach is dumb.

North Florida has good pieces and they have a strong (wacky) coach. They're a good team, albeit one that we should have beaten. Now, let's put it behind us and get better.

I confess, I usually only comment when we win. I watched a good bit of the game part time last night. There was a lot of bitching about D and then voila, our D got really good for a while in the middle of the game.

We got better last year as the season went on, so I expect the same this year. Simple, Stoudamire and the coaches know what they are doing. Fortunately I know so little about basketball that early season doesn't bother me. It isn't like baseball where I know our coaching staff is hapless (pitching wise).

Exceedingly better than only ever showing up to belittle when the team loses.

Nice, comfortable win. Just what the doctor ordered.

What I liked:
-The improved defense. The guys seemed to want to prove that they could defend in this game and they played with more intensity, particularly the end of the first half and beginning of the second. (The big question is...can they hold that intensity all game?)
-D.O. or Souare playing next to Baye. I know we were just playing matchups and TSU were playing two bigs so we did as well, but I thought it worked really well and helped to protect the rim and secure rebounds. Souare needs to work on defending without fouling but both guys were excellent on the boards (14 rebounds between them).
-I didn't like the way Nait George played...I loved it. He is such a good passer and it seemed like he really took his chances to take the ball to the basket or take the open three when it presented itself. Nothing is forced and he rarely makes a mistake.
-The team was aggressive and got to the FT line and shot pretty well there (26/34).

What I didn't like:
-stupid turnovers (14 against TSU???) and periods of offensive inefficiency. This wasn't our best game offensively, especially the second half (33% shooting overall is bad).
-Part of the bad offense is a particular pet peeve of mine....chucking contested threes early in the shot clock. If you have an open look , take it. But it seemed like we got lazy and started throwing up bricks instead of searching for the best shot. 11 of 36 is not good is a direct result of poor shot selection. This is something to watch moving forward. Are we a good or bad shooting team? I don't know yet.
-Three steals and 6 fast break points. While the defense was generally better, we could be much better about punching the ball and jumping passing lanes...defense that leads directly to offense is important for when our offense struggles.
-Still no Mutombo or walk-ons? Strange to me that coach didn't put them in for the last few minutes.

We have a couple of tough tests ahead that will teach us much more about our team but at least they took care of business against TSU. Well done, CDS and team! Go Jackets!

I saw things I liked and things I didn't. First half was wonderful, but we once again came out of halftime flat and couldn't score. Then, our defense let up considerably and we started taking really bad shots. When our defense is struggling, that's not the time to start chucking up shots. Conversely, when we can't score a basket, that's not the time to give up wide open shots and lanes to the basket. We really just need consistency. I'm worried about Baye. He looked physically outmatched the last half of the game. We really need him to be a solid presence down low and be able to box out anybody. We just seem to forget at times to put a body on someone to secure a rebound.

I didn’t get to watch much because of a work meeting last evening, but the stats look like George was a little more aggressive offensively. From what I saw, we seemed to box out a little better. I think we have a lot of potential once healthy and clicking.

Yes. Out for this game. Undisclosed injury at game time. Mustaf & Sutton also out
He's been battling a calf issue. He's been working through it over both of the first two games.

From where we sitting in those first two games, you could tell it was bothering him. We need him against the Dawgs!

Really good post, and I am right there with you.

DO is going to be one of my favorites. He always has a skowl on his face and looks pissed off. I loved seeing how he was willing to mix it up last night. Posey had a big dunk one time and was talking smack, and DO just pointed up at the scoreboard!!

My guess is that we will see DO get the start on Friday as well against UGA. We're going to need really big games from Baye, DO, and possibly even Souare to be the Mutts! This is one of those games where we need to shoot 45-50% on 30 trey attempts!

A comfortable win, and the game was never in doubt, but we ”lost” the second half 37-32, which shouldn’t have happened against Texas southern and isn’t all that encouraging.

A few of my thoughts and observations.

Onwecheckwa, despite any preseason hype to the contrary, does not look like a good shooter from distance. So far, it looks like he needs to be limited on offense to playing around the basket, because putting him on the perimeter is equivalent to playing a man down or giving up a turnover. This is not a problem to me, as I see more value in having his size near the basket anyway.

Duncan Powell seems to be forcing it on offense, which is resulting in a high percentage of bad shots that result in empty possessions or essentially turnovers. He needs to slow down, be a role player, and let the game and any scoring opportunities come to him. His bio says that he was the leading scorer (12 points per game) on his Sacramento State team last year, but he has to realize that isn’t going to be his role on this team and he needs to make the adjustment.

I would like to see more dribble penetration with intent to score rather than pass by Nait and McCollum. I understand the 4 out, spread, drive and kick concepts our offense is trying to exploit, but I think sometimes our point guards would have a higher percentage scoring opportunity by keeping the ball instead of kicking it out. Same good for Reeves and Terry to an extent.

Against Texas Southern, we only had 12 points in the paint. That seems awfully low, too low. Needed more dribble penetration (see above) and low post game. Settled for too many 3 pointers.

We only got 17 bench points and 13 of those were from Lance Terry. I know some of our players are sitting out for injury, but for a team that has been hyped as having better depth than GT has had in a long time, getting only 4 points (excluding Terry) off the bench isn’t encouraging. On the flip side, 4 out 5 starters and Terry (5 players total) scored in double figures, which is great.

I feel like refs are showing some bias against DO's size. His length is a feature, not a bug but he's had some really weird shooting fouls called on him defending the rim in the first few games. It's not his fault that opponents are awkwardly altering their shots to get the ball around his frame towards the hoop. I don't think his foul counts against UWG and TSU accurately show how well he's defending the rim without fouling. Hopefully it's just some bad officiating variance given the small number of games so far.

Certainly there was at least one foul called against him last night that was complete bs. He was just standing still, arms straight up, didn’t even leave his feet, and a much smaller Texas southern offensive player jumped into his body and got the foul call. DO did exactly what you teach a low post defender to do and the ref botched the call and bailed out the Texas southern player.
