  1. Report: Pepper Rodgers has passed

I was a kid in Charlotte when I saw Pepper for the first time. He was the Brown HS QB. They came to Charlotte to play Central HS. Central won 14 - 7, a big duel with Central's star HB, Larry Parker - a great high school football game. Pepper absolutely drove them crazy. I think the article...
  2. Favorite Georgia Tech Defensive Stand Of All Time

Dean Griffin was the Tech Cross Country Coach in addition to being the Dean of Students.
  3. Favorite Georgia Tech Defensive Stand Of All Time

Nov 15, 1952 vs. Alabama. I believe this may have been the first nationally televised college (regular season?) football game. Alabama was ahead 3-0 in the second half, first down on our 5 yard line and a opportunity to basically put the game away. Jackie Rudolph, all of 160 lbs, saved the...
  4. "From the Flats", just listened and CGC said

Some of these kids are graduating with eligibility remaining. Others, being bright Tech men, will be able to assess/re-assess their playing time prospects following spring practice, and may wish to transfer to improve their football prospects. Some may seek coaches input before deciding. I...
  5. What's different now?

Thanks for the update, BCJacket. It looks like the top four are breaking away (and VPI could probably re-join if they could rekindle enthusiasm in their program). Miami is something of a surprise, but I guess they're trying to stay within shouting distance of FSU in spite of their lack of results.
  6. What's different now?

Here's what I saw (from 2017): Here’s the numerical order of how much each ACC school spent on football; the accompanying national rank is in parentheses. The numbers include a variety of factors: coaching staff salaries, academic aid and recruiting finances. The AP states, though, two...
  7. What's different now?

I don't have detail, but I doubt we were next to last in the conference financially back then. This is not a trivial problem, and short of a major windfall, it's not going away quickly. It impacts funding of facilities, recruiting, and coaching talent.
  8. Is GT keeping up with the ever changing landscape of college football?

And the Chiefs.... but check out the 49ers (8 passes vs 42 running plays against Green Bay in the NFC Championship)! The pendulum may be about to swing back.
  9. Brains and football

I think he understood the difference.
  10. Brains and football

Quite a few years ago I was in grad school with an All-England rugby player. When I asked him what he thought of American football, he said couldn't pay him enough money to play, scarey, too violent - especially with those helmets!
  11. Brains and football

    And in today's news: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/28589371/hall-fame-defensive-end-chris-doleman-dies-age-58
  12. GT number 15 in lowest talent on roster

Something else to take into account: CPJ recruited for his offensive system, which in many cases emphasized different skill sets than what the ratings are based on. This, IMO, understated Tech's talent level relative to what we were trying achieve in our recruiting during CPJ's tenure.
  13. Brains and football

In NC high schools boys soccer is a fall sport, girls soccer a spring sport.
  14. Brains and football

I love football, but if I were the parent of a child today, I would be encouraging my children to play sports other than football. I suspect I would be in good company.
  15. Quarterback for next year

Yates did not have the benefit of a redshirt year's experience. I remember Joe Hamilton's redshirt freshman year - definitely nothing to write home about.
  16. Academic Requirements for Recruits

I have heard for a number of years that our coaches have generally believed that the bottom third made no sense to recruit, either because they didn't meet minimum entrance requirements or, if they did, they were likely to be miserable/unable to progress academically.
  17. Coaching Ranking by E$PN

An interesting list. The one that jumped out to me was Spurrier. I think he should have been higher.
  18. RIP: Leon Hardeman, GT Football Letterman 1950-1954, Hall of Fame Member, and All-American (Link)

Leon Hardeman was my boyhood Tech football idol. Difficult to imagine a more star-studded Tech backfield than the ones he played in with Billy Teas and Glenn Turner.... and earlier (before Teas) with Darrell Crawford.
  19. Why does Sec dominate the Acc every year?

We obviously have a little brother complex when it comes to SEC football. The opposite could be true of basketball (excepting UK), but the SEC probably doesn't care that much. Regardless, I think we are in the right conference. When elite college athletes start getting paid more, IMHO there...
  20. Buttkicker

Actually he missed two extra points and a short straight away field goal that would have given them the lead with 2 min left in the game. The Panther's regular kicker, Graham Gano, has been out for the season, replaced by undrafted rookie Joey Slye. Slye looked good early on but shaky lately...
