I’m watching college game day on ESPN. The gang is previewing UCLA versus Oregon and showed a bunch of clips of Chip Kelly’s offense. That dude is so darn creative with what he’s doing. Makes me shake my head at what we are doing. A lot of what he is doing is stuff that would work for our...
You’re probably right. But what about the meet and greet and signing autographs and all that jazz? The photo shoot was promoting an appearance he hast to make later to do all that stuff.
Of course they do. But they still do that stuff and do this stuff too. It’s a major distraction I think they don’t need. It’s also me versus we in a way.
How much free time does a student athlete have? I imagine their time is pretty much divvied up between school and football. If we were an SEC factory it might be a different story.
It’s not just time though. It’s where your mind is at.
As some have suggested there are two extremes in how coaches handle the press. I think a good coach lands somewhere in the middle. We got a guy on the opposite end of the spectrum as this guy.
Sims is very athletic and can do a lot of things on the football field. He is also pretty raw still and needs a lot of coaching. I’m not sure our quarterback coach/offensive coordinator knows how to do that.
The thing that concerns me about the coaches is that Sims had poor throwing mechanics when he arrived. He thrived in high school (in Jacksonville where I live) by being the best athlete on the field. Now, two years later, he has the same awful mechanics and footwork.
When I played sports, peewee through college, even after college, I never needed a coach to pump me full of "juice". Either you want to be there or you don't.
