I just saw this. It's like Thoreau said, "Sometimes circumstantial evidence is very strong, like when you find a trout in the milk." If ever there was a trout, it's funding for the football program decreasing in the face of pleas from a successful coach to increase it. I'm surprised (well, I'm...
  2. Your choice for Head Coach

Regarding Chadwell, I keep seeing disses about his recruiting. I thought that particular chestnut had been put to rest by the last 4 years. I think a winning program at Tech could average in the low 30s - high 20s in recruiting "rankings" over, say, a 10 year period; about the same as...
  3. Your choice for Head Coach

Yes. I voted for Chadwell, but there's a de3cent chance he won't bite. Same with BOB, unfortunately. Of the most ocmmmopnly mentioned, they are the most likely first calls. But … I wouldn't be upset with either Clark or Mullen. And it might come to that. All we can do is wait and see. Hard no...
  4. Pyron

What I like best its that he's big and he can run. As I said in another thread (moved in Their Infinite Wisdom by the mods) any of the usually mentioned head coach candidates would eat their eyes out to have him at QB and would immediately begin to recruit him again. I mentioned that Mullen...

I was very pleased that we won and that Pyron played so well. That out of the way, I would add that all of the main candidates mentioned here would eat their eyes out to have Pyron as a QB. Chadwell: "He's another McCall!" Leipold: "Well, he can step right in!" Mullen: "Another Nick Ferguson? I...
  6. APP at Coastal tonight

If you look at Clawson's career, you'll see that anyone expecting instant success if he took the Tech job is smoking something. He specializes in teams heavy on seniors and on long term player development. So far that has meant losing seasons for the first couple-three years. Then all of sudden...
  7. APP at Coastal tonight

Now, back to the topic. I watched some of the game last night and was, as usual, impressed. This team moves the football but even more to the point moves the football with the kind of players we can get into Tech. I especially like McCall, the two star (Horrors!!!) QB. Talk about player...
  8. APP at Coastal tonight

I do and I remember The Season That Could Have Been: 2002. What if Tony Hollings hadn't lost his career with a season ending knee injury against BYU? Well, I'll tell you. Hollings would have won the Heisman and Tech would have won 10 games, at least. Tony was O.J. Simpson cloned: 5'11" 220 and...
  9. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

Yes. The main thing that a program needs nowadays, imho, is a coach who either wins enough to tell the Big Donors™ to go peddle their potatoes or, like Saban, gets the AD tells them in no uncertain terms to do the same. This is risky if you aren't a Bama, but it needs to be done. I hope Tech...
  10. Option Football

Last word: there was a reason that Paul always wanted seasoned players on the field. Mills was an absolute beast and had experience. Bensson was a good BB, but he was not the same in short yardage situations and in the muck. I've always wondered how good Tech would have been if we had kept the...

If we could get him to take a look, then we should see what he'll do. I doubt he leaves the Wildcats, however; he has Martinez htis year and Howard coming up. He looks like he might retire there.
  12. Option Football

Look, Mills was born to be a spread option BB. The subsequent teams - like the crack coaching staff at Nebraska - didn't know what to do with him so they tried to make into an spread RB. WRONG. He belonged 4 yards behind the QB where he could hit the hole fast. Then the difficulty with bringing...

This, btw, is another reason I like both Chadwell and Mullen. Both of those guys know how to spot talent and use it. Chadwell spotted McCall who was a two star QB (Horrors!) in high school. Chadwell though he could do the job and he did. Mullen spotted Fitzgerald, a 3 star (barely, .81) TO QB...
  14. Option Football

It's real simple. Mills doesn't get fired and Tech wins 9 - 10 games for the next 3 seasons. And Paul is still coach. Does Tech have to kick two of the field goals against UT? Does Taquon not pitch the ball in the second overtime? Not with Mills on the field. Does Tech have a hard time...
  15. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

I always thought this was a load. Mainly because we won consistently and because a lot of our "low ratings" were the result of Paul holding players back so that he could get experienced people on the field. Ratings are a combination of the average ratings for the players and the number of...
  16. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

    1. He wins. I repeat: he wins. His programs have been successful. 2. We can afford him and he'd probably take the job, though perhaps not right away. 3. Who cares about "media reaction"? Or, to be more exact, after four years of a coach whose every move was dictated by media reaction and who...
  17. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

What gets me about this is that this apparently wasn't obvious when he interviewed. I caught that vibe after a couple of weeks. Still, you never know. Mike Leach is pretty squirrelly and he's a right good football coach. But Leach is squirrelly the right way and Collins wasn't.
  18. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

Reminds me a lot of Fridge's O when Joe was the QB. But I think he might be a bridge too far for Tech.
  19. HC Candidate/Rumors/Info Thread

I think you've got it backwards. You get a winning program and then the Big Donors™ come on board with the money. You need some seed cash, sure, but I sure do hope we keep the aforementioned donors out of Tech's coaching search. Doing that almost defines a professional college football program.

You left out Dan Mullen. Imho, if we call chadwell and he turns us down, then Mullen is next up. Then we go to Fritz (and get turned down; Tulane will match us, I think), then to O'Brien.
