  1. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

I remember going to a Tangerine Bowl long ago and far away, and a fellow down front had one of those portable 9-inch or so TVs and watched the game on it. Just outside one end of the then-small stadium was one of Orlando's four million lakes, later to become one of four million sinkholes. A guy...
  2. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

Well, not a good comparison because Dodd was beating everybody in those yeares and hitting one of only five bowl games in January. I don't live there now but grew up there and "the university's" smugness drove me nuts, but to me it is not even close as which is better. the opt-out obviously is...
  3. JT's future role

I'm with you. I know he would compete, but there really is no template for him. The kid at Clemson comes to mind, but he actually is a lot bigger than Thomas, just from the standups on TV. I'm sure his numbers are inflated to, but I am still really, really curious about how big Thomas really is...
  4. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

    to each his own.
  5. Goose interviewing at Alabama

You were using an alternate set of facts.
  6. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

I like the way you think.
  7. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

Right on cue, I suppose, but if any of the regular season games is leading to the conference championship, it is more important. One competes to win titles, not bragging rights while somebody else plays for the ACC title. That's a pretty empty boast. His fan base may not want to hear it but...
  8. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

and they say the good old days weren't that good. Andon another post, didn't Dodd get George Morris out of Mississippi? An all-time great for any era.
  9. ACC>SEC in '17. Why? Coaches & QB's

That's a good list and a lot of work. Thanks for posting it. I might think Richt should be higher (and I am afraid we might find out at Miami) and Mendenhall and Fuentes will be. I just don't get Fedora at UNC because even with all the scandal that is a recruiting dream in Chapel Hill. And while...
  10. Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

But those Saturday night LSU games were stirring affairs, weren't they? I wasn't aware he didn't like them, but they were really good when LSU had the title of the best losing football team in the country or some such.
  11. Goose interviewing at Alabama

While I find arrogance vastly irritating, i really am anxious to see how he does down in Boca, and if he has learned anything at all about the personalities of coaching. Based on his departure, probably not, and he might be out of chances.
  12. JT's future role

Didn't he actually look back? The whole argument about two guys who already graduated is kind of like calling "slippance" in shooting marbles. Did I just date myself?
  13. JT's future role

Faster in '14; slower in '16, and who can figure out '15?
  14. ACC>SEC in '17. Why? Coaches & QB's

I might amend it to "Our offense is not as dependent on the superstar QB as others," and argue the rest separately. I'd love to have a Watson every year but we don't gotta.
  15. Goose interviewing at Alabama

they are there in numbers with Fisher and Dantonio kind of leading but McElwain looks kind of promising I guess. The rest, not so much. I'm sure there is at least one the board wishes the worst for. (And his crazed look in the 4th quarter against Tech was astonishing to watch.)...
  16. Goose interviewing at Alabama

Somebody once described a former Saban coach as describing to him (several times removed in other words) that working on Saban's Alabama coaching staff was like going to war every day, without a gun.
  17. ACC>SEC in '17. Why? Coaches & QB's

I would argue that it was coaching turnover, not stability, that launched the ACC. Miami,Va., VT, Pitt, Louisville, Wake, NC State, UNC, and somewhere I am missing one or more, all flipped in the last five years, the exodus perhaps beginning with Bowden in '11 or '12. (A great football mind and...
  18. Is This year ours in the ACC?

Name another sports message board in the world where "standard deviation" is used. I might have more to say when I look it up. But I like it.
  19. Is This year ours in the ACC?

Nothing so much creates a family man as a football coach who didn't get it done. But UNC is a location and a situation that almost can't fail to win football titles. And they don't. Don't know why because they have everything. Of course they had more but they got caught.
  20. Alexander-Tharpe Fund: Harrison Butker

Suppose we disagree on "political". Urging your audience to remember your country's values while specifically disclaiming any interest in their political views is hardly political. And it does not say much for those presumed members of the scholarship fund to suggest they won't contribute...
