Court Blows Up NCAA Transfer Rules

Oh well. I was hoping the NCAA might revisit the one-time free transfer rule to rein in the portal/tampering craziness...guess that's not happening.

Jamal Haynes, Singleton & Rutherford (good news)

Well, he said "some schools" contacted his family. He didn't say "some guys", or "some people affiliated with other schools". He didn't say his family reached out to other schools. You may be correct, but I don't see why you would give other schools the benefit of the doubt based on the words...

Jamal Haynes, Singleton & Rutherford (good news)

Really glad Singleton is staying. We all know tampering happens, but it's rare to see it called out so explicitly: @Kelly_Quinlan Freshman WR Eric Singleton Jr. said when he made the decision to come to Georgia Tech, he never had a plan to leave once he signed with GT. The portal wasn't on...

Transfer Portal: Who do we need to target this offseason?

I think it's too early. The portal only opened for undergrads on Dec 4. Just browsing 24/7, it appears that only a small percentage of portalers (or is that portalees?) have been identified as finding a new home.

    Conference Realignment

Wasn't the rumor that FSU (and perhaps Clemson too) was leaving in November? Or was it October? I can't keep up with these rumors. It's been like the guy who predicts the apocalypse on a certain day, then the day passes, so the date changes, etc. :)

An Open Letter to J Batt

While the number of teams in the playoff shouldn't influence the rankings, you make a good point.

An Open Letter to J Batt

I agree with you that a 16-team field would be better. If we had the 12-team playoff this year, there would still be controversy. FSU would get in but would still need to play an extra game compared to Bama or Texas since the top 4 get byes. Going to a 16-team field could yield the same...

The End of College Sports As We Know It

This proposal may be a reaction to the legal trouble the NCAA is facing on multiple fronts. If schools are going to be required to pay athletes anyway, why not try to put some new guidance in place that at least some schools could embrace? House v. NCAA – Athletes seeking two years of back pay...

    CFP Discussion

I hope the proposed lawsuit has legs and we get to see what the committee members say under oath when they are deposed. It will either reveal the conspiracy or reveal the stupidity of their logic.

GT vs UCF - Gasparilla Bowl (was GT vs Troy - Birmingham Bowl)

Not sure if this belongs here but I just came across some info on bowls that had me shaking my head. A division of ESPN called ESPN Events not only has the media rights to a lot of the bowl games but owns and operates a lot of the bowls outright – including the Gasparilla. How many? Seventeen...

    CFP Discussion

It's behind a paywall, but Stewart Mandel has one of the best takedowns of the CFP committee's decision logic that I've seen so far. https://theathletic.com/5115651/2023/12/06/mandel-mailbag-fsu-playoff-portal/?source=dailyemail&campaign=601983 Some key points: After last weekend, Texas jumped...

The End of College Sports As We Know It

First, ESPN only cares about eyeballs and ad revenue. They would focus their energy and investment into promoting their compelling matchups, just like they do now for the SEC. They could still broadcast the games of the lower strata but at a lower payout. The analogy would be current G5 games or...

The End of College Sports As We Know It

Loss of revenue would be a problem, and a potential drop in alumni/booster support isn't the biggest issue. We are more dependent on Media $ than most of our peer institutions. TV revenue plus ticket sales makes up almost half our revenue. We would likely suffer a significant loss there, at...
