I get what you and NCjacket are saying, but ... Tech today is not Tech of 1980. Research delivers $1B a year in revenue ... and that’s the REAL change. Tech’s President isn’t compensates on football. He is compensated on research. It’s a HUGE shift in priorities that even Geoff may not understand.
Many of the top programs have a talent composite of 800+. GT is currently around 678. We have big gap to close ... if we can even do that. This is why game day coaching is so important.
Here's an example. I recall a few years ago playing Vanderbilt at BDS. The opening play was a TD pass by GT...
These are fun comparisons to make, but increasingly irrelevant. I understand why Tech went with the TO (academic issues, money issues) and also Geoff’s strategy (be close to the action while working your NIL rights).
The reality is this ... Tech has a break even athletic program, a small alumni...
Georgia has a better football program than Auburn. Malzahn doesn’t recruit as well, development is lacking, and Malzahn’s approach to the is dated. Saban has continuously changed since ‘07 and it shows.
Kirby was a good DC. But he’s not a great head coach. His first year was a disaster. Georgia...
Coastal is a good school but this is an example of a very poorly run GTAA. We had the worst facilities in D1 I’m 1980. No Strategic Plan for athletics, no fundraising initiatives (until recently), hiring coaches, firing them and paying enormous settlements.
And what has changed? 40 years later...
Interesting comment. We may as well compare Geoff to Bill Fulcher and Bud Carson.
One of the things people forget is that Bobby Dodd has a lifetime win rate of 70%. Dodd was trained by Bob Neyland who had Seven Maxims to win a game. Despite all the changes over the years, those maxims are still...
Bear Bryant, Nick Saban and Lou Holtz - all pretty good coaches - describes the TO as the most lethal offense and very difficult to defend against. It was impressive.
But the game has changed. The NFL is a passing game now and with the TO, you can’t recruit a dual threat QB. Which means you...
I‘m not sure Geoff is focused on winning. I never understood the “let’s wait til I get my guys in” argument. I was expected to deliver with what I had.
We’ll be 6-6 next year. 9-3 in 2022. We’ll win the ACC Championship ins 2023. And a Natty in 2024, beating Alabama 37-35 in one of the greatest games in modern football.
wut?
I’m assuming Geoff will get to a 0.600 win rate which improves on CPJ’s 0.57 whatever. Some years we’ll win 10, others...
The fan base? The fan base doesn’t provide tuition waivers. Or degree waivers. only the Hill can do that.
Tech is a small alumni base, urban school. The tide is against it being a Top 10 program ... it might could be Top 25.
