I feel your pain. But I’ve worked with executives worldwide for 40 years. Some have it. Some don’t. Geoff ... is in the dont column. I wish it were different ur he sucks as a leader. He should probably run for political office.
Aide: "Coach Collins? It's time for our post game report."
Collins: "OK. I want to have a prop. Let me use this ball during the presser."
Aide: "That's fine sir. But, um ... that's a basketball. Don't you think a football would be more appropriate?"
Collins: "Which one is that?"
Aide: "It's the...
I'm inclined to believe that if Geoff flips the offense and recruiting, we will be able to hire a real coach. And Geoff can retire to Pawley's Island and play on the sand dunes for all I care. He's barely qualified to work at Waffle House, much less eat there.
Geoff, as the CEO of Georgia Tech football, is not going anywhere. Which is probably accurate, because Georgia Tech football is not going anywhere either.
How ironic that a guy WHO PLAYED HERE (TStan) has so thoroughly destroyed the program HERE, but yeah ....... he is going to have a nice new...
That’s been true for 50 years. All the other teams have weekly meetups. Hell, my ME prof, Kezios, was a diehard Bears fan. Everyone in Atlanta is from somewhere else.
Attendance? You can forget it. I read all of the NCAA studies on attendance and it's declining everywhere. It is particularly a problem for urban schools with a limited alumni density within 5 miles of campus. (Sound like Tech?) It will not matter if Tech wins the ACC or not ... attendance is...
Reminds me of Vince Lombardi story. The Packers only ran six plays ... but Lombardi had them practice those plays OVER and OVER and OVER until they were as reliable as the night is long. "Missing by inches ... " was not an excuse Lombardi used.
Geoff ... "Look. I know I'm 6-17 at Tech. But had...
I remember when Bill Curry became coach. He freely admitted he did NOT know how to coach as a HC on game day when the bullets are flying. So after EVERY game, he sat down with Bobby Dodd and they dissected the game ... what worked and why, what did not work and why, and things to pay attention...
Gus was a No. He has a terrible reputation in the NFL and that's what the Tech strategy is ... give players an option to the NFL or, a great education. Gus was perceived as another version of CPJ and so, was not really considered. Tech Masterminds really want SA's to think of Tech as a path to...
Auburn wasn't much better. Traditionally, the tailgating was campus wide. I saw very few tents out and a very weak game day atmosphere. Like you, I heard the stadium announcers YELLING as the color analysts were talking. Yikes. It sounded terrible. My high school goes to state every year and has...
To be fair, Tech can raise money. Not Alabama money, but definitely Top 30 money. The problem is the AA is terrible at money management and has piles and piles of debt. That's been our Achilles heel for decades.
But here's what's funny. Collins is regarded as a defense mastermind. Yet, Dan Mullin, whom he worked for ... wasn't exactly complimentary. I'm wondering if Geoff is a one-trick pony. (Recruiting). Maybe he's not good at pretty much everything.
I've worked with all sorts of great functional managers (Director of Engineering, Finance, whatever) who were disasters as the General Manager. They just weren't well-rounded enough to really understand how the business worked in total. Happy to sail over Niagra Falls in a barrel.
When asked...
Does Collins even know? One reason (of the three) that got Gus Malzahn fired was his inability to develop Bo Nix. I can't imagine Geoff can ... it's just not his thing.
