I think the interview will go something like this ... "Your tenure at Tech was disappointing. What did you learn?" and the correct answer is ... "I tried to be a know-it-all and focus too heavily on branding and disparaging the previous regime. I now know the importance of good assistants...
Actually, studies show that hiring senior people who have failed at least once generally have higher results in future roles because they have learned from their mistakes. Not ALWAYS true, but most companies want top guy to be experienced with failure.
Who says that's NOT happening? If he sold his house, he's probably sending them down to Florida or wherever he has his second home. That's what I'd do ... "Honey, take the kids and let's plan 2023. I'll stick it out here and we'll use the $3.3M to buy our forever home."
Totally agree. If Geoff has checked out, it becomes a timing issue. I'd offer to pay the full buyout of $10.5 but over an extended term, say 7 or 10 years. If he is not having any fun, he might go for it. Besides, he would normally be required to seek new employment and if he gets a DC job...
I don't know. But my understanding is that if he is fired before Year 4, he gets the full value on departure. After that, he continues to get paid annually. That's what it was for Malzahn and why he walked away with a $30M check in his pocket.
But I'm assuming the contracts are similar. They...
They probably don't. But taunting can take many forms. "Your Dad sucks! I hope he coaches at Tech forever. ha ha ha ha". You know how it goes on the playground.
I think the best path forward is to use this crisis as a catalyst to major change. Let the AA get a $10M loan to buy Geoff out. Then, have several donors pony up $25 million towards debt relief IF ... it is matched 3:1 by individual contributions. That cuts $100M right there. Refi. And do it...
That's why I always like the simplicity of how Saban describes his approach. "All we are trying to do is execute the play as it was designed and as perfectly as we can. That's it."
I lived 35 years in Atlanta and knew Buckhead pretty well. I don't know where his kids go school (Marist? Westminister? Other?), but kids can get a lot of pressure and make things uncomfortable. Sometimes, families just say, "Dad, we aren't having any fun here" and Dad makes plans to move on.
Yes. And no.
If you look at this dispassionately, we were supposed to be 2-2 by the end of September. That was almost unanimously communicated on these boards. Well, so far ... we have lost to exactly who we thought we would lose to. 42-0 looks terrible. But so does 42-14 for Auburn, which is...
While you are correct, I recall when Butch Jones was being forced out. He wanted the money but ... his wife was getting spit on at the local Kroger (true story). I am sure his family is feeling a lot of pressure and who knows ... he may be open to a negotiated settlement.
