General News about Key and his Staff

I don't have an issue with it, its a business decision. But ... GT has to do a better job and stop paying people not to work. We can't afford those mistakes and we seem to repeat them over and over.

The good news is that historically, Nebraska never cared about defense. PeeWee Herman could be a co-DC there. If Geoff wears his skinny suits, he may fit right in.

I worked some with the US military in Iraq. If they had FOB's (Forward Operating Bases) that were not performing well, when a new commander came in ... they purged ALL of the previous marks and then ... put out entirely new ones. The point was "This is ours. We own it. We are responsible for...

General News about Key and his Staff

You can laugh me all you want. I said it was up to Key to retain him or not and if he wants to pay Long off $850K, rock on. If Batt found money to get rid of him OR ... he's cutting expenses elsewhere, that's a business decision. The funny thing is ... Long is here and has a two-year deal...

General News about Key and his Staff

You are correct, but the premise is the same. Increase the marketability of the program and share in the results. Everyone loves to mention Jamey Chadwell. Under his last contract, Chadwell can earn up to $2.3 million in bonuses for the program's success. A division title earns him $400,000...

Wrong. If the incentive is to win and go to a bowl, Tech gets paid for that. Properly structured, more revenue is available and more can be applied to variable comp.

General News about Key and his Staff

It's not an issue of dollars. Fritz and Tech agreed on the number. Fritz wanted it guaranteed, Tech wanted it incentivized. The GTAA does not have the bucks to guarantee payoffs after mailing a check for $10M.

General News about Key and his Staff

You must have missed the layoffs last year. GTAA generates revenue ... they also generate expenses. Lots of them. The reality is that the debt eliminates the running room that so many other equally sized programs have to do what they want. Tech does not have that flexibility.

I have no info on that. I did message Deep Throat and he confirmed to me that the Board is very well aware of its financial condition and what it can and cannot offer. Key was willing to accept an incentive laden contract, WF was not.

General News about Key and his Staff

If I don't have money to eat or pay rent, I don't have the money. Does it really matter which bill I am not going to pay? The GTAA is break-even on a good day. It's in the hole now as I am sure they are dipping into a revolver to cover the short-term. Folks think that "Oh, it's just a million...

All true, but it's water under the bridge. He didn't take the Tech offer because Tech COULDN'T offer him what he wanted.

General News about Key and his Staff

First, Key was not the first choice. He may not even have been second, so I'm not sure how much stock I would place here. Also, it has been mentioned that it was Key that recruited Long in the first place, so if true, they may say, "You picked him, you own him." Still, it's immaterial to me...

General News about Key and his Staff

I am referring to why the Fritz contract fizzled. WF wanted a greater percentage of his compensation to be guaranteed and Tech said no. The $850K would have done it. This tells me that Tech doesn't have the flexibility to throw $850K into the toilet.

General News about Key and his Staff

I get it. And it's immaterial to me, it's not my money. It's the GTAA's. And if they HAD $850K, we would have had a different head coach. If we are so callous about it, we should get rid of Chaney, Long .. .one or both.

General News about Key and his Staff

Actually, it is NOT a sunk cost. It hasn't occurred yet. If acted upon, it is a conscious decision to forgoe any future value or production but still pay out. Again, if Key is fine with it, it's $850K <poof>.

General News about Key and his Staff

Alabama did something which I thought was brilliant. Every OC that comes in brings his own playbook, own terminology and players have to spend months learning it. Saban dictated that the terminology would be standardized and that any new OC would have to adapt his playbook to Alabama rather...

General News about Key and his Staff

That's fine. You simply have to be comfortable burning $850K and getting absolutely nothing in return. And if Key is okay with that, rock on.

Official: Brent Key is Georgia Tech Football's Head Coach

I asked my Auburn players if they judge their performance on wins and losses. The answer was a resounding "no". Players have no direct control over the outcome (e.g., injuries, weather, Covid, etc.). What they DO have control over is the quality of their assignment. That is what they are...

General News about Key and his Staff

I do not know the situation with Long and don't really care if he stays or goes. But, it is $850K and had we placed that as a guarantee, Fritz would most likely have been selected. So, it's not immaterial. Re your question, I was put in charge with 17 direct reports and corporate HR flew down...
