I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts, but I don't think I like their proxy for starting pitcher strength. Day of the Week? If you can make all of the other calculations that go into the formula, can't you somehow make the pitching matchup calculation based on the actual starting pitchers...

This 100%. There is no such thing as "the best four teams". Teams present different matchup problems for their opponents. Team A could be a matchup problem for Team B and therefore better than Team A, while Team B could for the same reason be better than Team C, while Team C for the same reason...

Very true and accurate. LSU won the CWS this past season with 2 of their top 3 players being transfers. It is the way the game is played, and not doing so is akin to playing with a hand tied behind your back.

The advantage that the Big 10 and the Big 12 have had as far as non-conference scheduling is that they only play 8 conference series, so that allows them an additional 2 non-conference weekends. The ACC used to be this way and I remember us playing in some of the early season tournaments as well...

IMO, playing UGa as the only non-conference P5 isn't the issue. I think that is true for a large majority of schools (possibly even all schools...a quick glance through 2023 ACC and SEC schedules and I can't find anyone who played more than one weekend series against P5 schools****). After all...

One correction...the Southern game on 4/9 should have an RPI much higher than 298. Your 2/20 line for Southern says they had an RPI of 104, which seems more correct. It doesn't change your point that we have a week non-conference schedule and need to do really well in those games if we want to...

I hope we aren't OK with 5 walks in 9 innings. That is essentially where we were at last season (5.4 walks/9 innings) and would be in the bottom half of the ACC based on 2023 numbers.

Did Simpson get injured? I see that his last steal was on September 6th, and his last four games at Bowling Green he only ran once, getting thrown out. Then, after being promoted to Durham he didn't appear in any games. G0lftime or anyone else have any details on this?

Didn't realize this is the case. I agree it would be an issue. My time as a student was before laptops, but I would often take my backpack loaded with a textbook or two and do some studying if the game got a little slow.

I found data going back to 2002 on ramblinwreck.com Based on that, our highest average was ~2,100/game in 2003. Most seasons in that time period the average was ~2,000 +/- 200. Not 3,000 but much better than what we get now. So, I'll amend my post to say I wish we could get back to averaging...

Yeah, maybe a fish story involved here a little. I don't have any hard data, but I can remember back around 2008 when I had to worry about sellouts for the big games.

Man I wish we could get back up to the 3,000 or so mark. I truly think there is too much local competition for the entertainment dollar for it to go much higher than that, but we should be able to get back to 3,000 IMO.
