I posted a few days ago about John Davis. All it took for him to start was one reserve performance. It could be that Petty is one of those naturally strong people, like Randy White. The Manster never hit the weights much and never got much bigger than 260; he didn't need to with his level of natural strength. If Petty turns out to be like that then he may push to the top of the list very quickly.

But … if he starts anywhere, I'm betting on D. He is just as good on D as he is on O. Given that we need DTs, I'd see if he'll play there for next season. If he says ok, then we might have one problem solved. And he'll get to the pros faster - too bad for Tech - as a DL.

A tall kid ( moore) from HS in Texas that played TE till his Sr year got significant playing left guard. As posted he added 30# and its obvious he knows how to pull block.

Petty will play - at least play part time.

Unless he’s “just that good,” do we want a tFR to start on the OL?
Sure, but moore played some as freshman so i think petty will as well.

We all hope the other players who have been on bench are good enough to keep him off field by thier performance. If petty is good and doesn't play due to thier performance, that would be great.

Splitting the middle, he will play - at least part time.

Agreed. I graduated high school in 1992 and a had a good friend play basketball for UGA. He moved up there in the summer to start the nutrition/weight program. I visited him right before school started (stayed in McWhorter in the athletic dorm - which was fun) and after a few months he was already transformed. They had cut his body fat and he was so much stronger, it was crazy. And this was 30 years ago, before so many advances in nutrition and weight training. So, I have no doubt that Petty's ability to start next year will not be determined not by his strength/weight, but rather by his attitude and determination. Kind of like everything else in life!

Side note: for those that don't remember, that 1992 UGA basketball class was pretty stacked - Shandon Anderson and Carlos Strong were the headliners. The two things I remember most about that visit were (1) I shook Charles Claxton's (7-footer) hand when I met him and his fingers reached about 3 inches past my wrist, and (2) Pertha Robinson - the point guard - was the best Tecmo Bowl player I had ever seen in my life.
Steroids were all the rage…

IMO yes. Putting on weight is an easier problem to deal with than keeping it off. But he’s a better tackle at 285 than a lot of guys at 310. You can’t teach his strengths (wingspan, motor, strength, leverage, athleticism) and all that will translate immediately. Combine that with a full spring of Geep’s coaching and I see him being a major contributor at minimum.
This #285 is sufficient for OT w Petty’s athleticism …

I was talking to another Tech fan about this. I’m not too concerned about him putting the weight on. If I remember correctly he is a state level wrestler too which means he has been actively trying to keep his weight down. I think getting into a college weight room and and on an OL nutrition plan it won’t be that difficult for him
This young man has never had to drop weight for wrestling unless he was trying to get down to 215. The gap is huge between 215 and 285 (a 70lb gap in one class.

For each position
There are naturally big.
There are naturally fast

Leave out naturally athletic and the sucess margin for an in betweener is very small.

Key is all in that petty is an athletie and so Key will study and take time finding best spot for him. That includes adjusting the scheme.
" Build (it right ) and they will come".

Also, Josh has a late birthday for his class. I believe he won't turn 18 until the Fall.

It won’t be difficult for an athlete like JP but it does take calendar time.
