I’d pick out more stats, but I’m on mobile. Main caveat is that these are not adjusted for opponent. Kickoffs are notably worse on the road as well.

So the question is, why do we suck so bad away from BDS, especially on defense?

Crowd noise and intimidation in hostile environments. You just don't waltz into the whatever the heck the name of the stadium that the U plays in or Scott Stadium in Charlottesville or Wallace Wade in Durhams in front of 100's of screaming fans and expect to walk out of their with a victory. In places like that, if a fan in row 100 says something mean, you can hear it. It gets in your head. Or you can hear the hot dog vendor. All of a sudden, you are thinking of how nice it would be to have a couple of dogs with slaw and relish. Meanwhile, you are not carrying out your assignment and you fail to block the guy in front of you or you forget to wrap up the ballcarrier and what should have been a 2 yard gain goes for 8 or 10. Coaches aren't immune. When you get to thinking about hot dogs, you can forget to dial up plays to bring pressure on what heretofore has been a pretty pedestrian QB and a line that has struggled to protect him. Or, you can forget momentarily that you are a TO team that struggles to pass and call a bunch of passes despite evidence that suggests that you don't throw the ball well. This is another thing that elevates the ACC above the SEC. Saban and Malzahn and Smart don't have to take their squads into these pits of ennui. Let them try winning in the 3 places I mentioned above. ;)

Teams play worse in the road. Our odd year schedule also has the easier games at home and the harder games on the road. Next year will be flipped, so we should do better

Short answer: "Mind ain't rite" Long answer: Who knows but it is worse this year for our team than any time in living memory.
