-My Mom, for raising me and sister by herself(since 1 years of age, for me).
-My Grandpa for making me into a man and teaching me the game of baseball.
-My Greatgrandfather who was a Minister. He was a Man of God all 98 years.

-Baker Cox, Al Ciraldo Sr., for standing up for me at Shriners & being great role models.
-Coach John C. “Whack” Hyder for going to my hoop games and Christening my boy.
-Coach Byron Gilbreath for going to my games and playing me 1 on 1 too many times.
-Coach Jim Luck for going to my games, taking me around campus.
-All of these men were wonderful people and made me a Jacket. I pull for Tech vs. my Alma Mater.

-Eleanor Camarotta, Teacher. If she didn’t prod me to enter a Math Contest, I would have never taken region or state. Gave me her time early in the morning at N. Fulton before school started to discuss anything on my mind. Teenagers need people like this.

So all those people contributed to your being a Jacket, but you didn't go to Tech? Am I understanding you correctly?

Yes, especially encouraged by Big Bee(Byron G.). He was an All-American at Texas Tech, farm near Athens, started coaching over there in the pit. He and the others I listed all told me to go to State for Business and Baseball. I wanted Tech, but everything was scholar-shipped over there between academia & athletically. Even the Pro Baseball team that offered 8k, wanted me away from Engineering. They kept saying, you’ll need Robinson Business to learn how to handle your money. Baseball is your future.

We all have regrets. I have given 100x more money to Tech over the years than GSU.
I only took a few Grad. classes at GT when State was full during my time of day. We had State guys playing in the Tech Band.

Funny story. Al called me up one night and asked if I could get to the Varsity pronto.
I was a kid, grabbed a bus and a cab home afterwards. He was recruiting two Ohio boys and a Indiana kid for hoops. These guys were huge. No coaches around. Big Al was in charge of the visit. I told those guys, they had to come to Tech or it would be the mistake of their life. I was right. Al reeled two of them in.

@Buzzbomb Not to be offensive, but it looks like you put together a list of role models and great people. Maybe it’s just my military background, but a hero would have done something heroic requiring extreme courage or bravery. These folks may have been noble, honorable, virtuous, generous, admirable, etc but heroic?

@LibertyTurns ; Sir, in my eyes they were my role models. Great men.
I eulogized my best buddy who did 3 1/2 tours of ‘Nam. He was 51. Master Sergeant and briefed Colin Powell when he came into the Army. Gary always told me, I’m not a hero(Purple Heart, among many medals), I don’t want you to consider me one. Promise me, he said. I want to be your older brother. When I ran the Informant Line in Criminal, I hired him away from Facilities Management because he didn’t want a furlough. That man was the epitome of devotion with a work dynamic above reality.
I bought a plot next to him. Hopefully, you understand the semantics of your question. There is no Military Man equal to him in my eyes, and I love Pres. Carter.

Common guys/gals, somebody has a hero. I’m getting grilled over here. This was intended for us, not me alone! I promise, it’s therapeutic. You’ll feel better?

@Buzzbomb Understand. Our nation had a weird transition in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Frankly, I believe a large percentage of America were embarrassed by their treatment of our military and wish that moment in history could be erased. Now many are trying to overcompensate by labeling all/most/many military members as heroes.

We’ve got a wide range of military experiences on here. Certainly there are heroes among us and your buddy was likely one by your comments, but military service does not make one a hero. Those people are few in number and special indeed.

I'm racking my brain trying to think of the heroes in my life. I guess I would say quite a few of my teachers in both Jr HS and HS, particularly my Jr HS English teacher, and my HS chemistry teacher. I would have to include several people at my church who greatly influenced my life when I was growing up and more or less molded me into the man I eventually became. And of course, my parents. Like others, I have somewhat of a problem actually referring to them as heroes, since they really didn't make any sacrifices for me....other than my parents, of course, who paid my way through Tech, I am sure giving up much of what they could have used for other things. God bless them all.

i think defining hero is a matter of perspective....

my dad worked his *** off in a steel mill for 50 years. 3 shifts. along side of donkeys early on. in temps of 110 degrees. he would be one person i would call a hero from the perspective of a child

jfk was not only a war hero but he was assassinated. we share the same bd....

years ago when i was a practicing christian i would have also mentioned jesus. real or not the idea of jesus and what he did appeals to me. so he would be another....

buzzbomb.... for starting this thread. heh

As an electrical engineer, my professional hero is Nikola Tesla. Without him our world would look dramatically different today.
Some of his inventions
1. Alternating Current
2. The AC Electric motor
2a Induction Motor
2b Switched Reluctance Motor
3. Radio
4. First remote controlled / robotic device
4a. Remote Control
5. Wireless Energy Transfer
6. Neon Lamp / Fluorescent tubes.
7. First AC power plant (Niagara Falls)
7A. First long distance transfer of electric power. (Edison needed a DC power plant every 500 to 1,000 feet)
8. Tesla Coil (Not life changing but cool)
9. Blade-less Turbine. (Not life changing but cool)
10. Helped develop X-rays

He has about 300 Patents

I have to agree totally with Al Ciraldo and Whack, two giants in dignity and integrity

I wonder if we have anybody on the Swarm that took P.E. from either Coach Hyder or Coach Gilbreath? As a youngster, I spent separate days with each of them on campus. Following them around, eating lunch, & in their office. Many lunches with Al, too.

Baker Cox didn’t miss a home game for 38 years, a road game for 28 straight years. He did start a new home streak that encompassed another 34 years consecutively.

I had Whack for PE, so yes to your question.

Interesting fact: Mr. Ciraldo was the first member of the Braves Press, when they moved here from Milwaukee. He was the perfect baseball announcer. I’m not sure he was credited for doing Akron Zips baseball before coming to Atlanta.

Coach Hyder is the only one that I listed above, who is actually a GT graduate. He left Tech to play minor league ball in the Yankees organization in the late 1930’s.

Space Shuttle Challenger Crew
Today marks the 34th anniversary since the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded off Cape Canaveral in Florida, instantly killing everyone on board.

best thread i could find to avoid creating one....
I'll never forget that day. Greg Jarvis was a payload specialist from Hughes Aircraft Company (who was on board).
I, along with 600 other HAC employees, applied for that position.
