What whiskey are you drinking?

I’m about to spend a week in Atlanta for an inspection. How much is this? High proof hides many flaws, but if it’s not too expensive, I’m always willing to try something new.

Edit: I see those are both single barrels, so it’s really a crapshoot.

Edit 2: What do they mean by double oaked? What is the age of the barrels? Is the second barrel virgin oak or a barrel used to age something else (even if that something else was whiskey)?

Picked these guys up from Corks & Caps earlier. Highly recommend to anybody in the Atlanta area. The rye is out of this world and the bourbon isn't far behind. Shortbarrel is killing it.

You seem to like high proof whiskey. I do too. I challenge you to take a pour and add a drop of water at a time and see if at around 100, 95, and 92 there aren’t some deficiencies. If not, you have yourself a winner.

Nice! Actually I'm getting ready to do a couple of days in the Chicago area in a few weeks for work.

What part of Atlanta are you gonna be in? I can give you the scoop on some good shops to hit up.

These are single barrel store picks from Corks & Caps over in Buckhead (Sandy Springs address, but more Buckhead than SS imo). They were 80 each. They're both sourced from OZ Tyler (now Green River) aged 6+ years and then dumped into second new charred oak barrel for 7 months (hence the double oak). The double oaking gives it some additional sweetness. They still had a decent amount left when I picked them up yesterday. I know the rye was a shorter barrel (I think I heard 80 bottles total). I'm a big rye guy and if you're only gonna get one, I'd recommend it if you like ryes. Both are top notch though.

Shortbarrel is actually up in Norcross. They're a few years old now and also bought the Old Fourth Distilling brand a while back. They do incredible stuff. There's a lot of store picks in the Atlanta area and I haven't come across a bad one yet. Most of their stuff is either OZ Tyler or Bookers juice (stuff that Jim Beam thought either thought was off profile or just wanted to get rid of for other reasons). They have some older ones that are Heaven Hill juice too.

Had our Thanksgiving meal at Seasons 52 in Buford as we normally do. Today accompanied by Whistle Pig 100 Rye and Uncle Nearest 1884, both neat. I liked the pig a lot. Uncle was ok.

LOL! OZ Taylor? The infamous gimmicky shaking barrels?!!!! No thanks for any NDP that doesn't source from MGP, BT, or Tennessee. OZ Taylor means overpriced 3 year old whiskey. No thanks. OZ Taylor doesn't age anything 6 years that I know of. I need proof to believe this. Please provide proof that OZ Taylor is aging anything 6 years. Seems they're part of Bardstown Bourbon now. My! how times have changed.

OZ is now (back to) Green River.

For starters here's a Green River that's 6:

Think all of the oldest stuff out there is 6-7 years. I have several Shortbarrel OZ Tyler Picks and several of these Green River Picks that are 6+ years. I think you're referring to when they were trying to do the 1 year 1 day thing and then the TerrePure process and then sell it. This is not that.

The SB OZ Ryes have outblinded some other favorite ryes (Sagamore 8 yr, multiple OF cask strength SiBs, Michter's BS, Prideful Goat, Redwood Empire Cask, etc) several times. The bourbon holds it's own with some of my better bottles as well. I'm not sure if all of the stuff at OZ Tyler utilized that TerrePure process or if Green River is using it currently, but the stuff I've had that's been sourced from there is damn good. I'd recommend you try before you write it off. The Green River base stuff is really good too. I really like the Full Proof for an easy to find, well priced full proof bourbon.

SB does have some MGP stuff too (from 5 to 12 years that I've seen), but honestly I've preffered the OZs to most of them.

According to this, that TerrePure process was abandoned pretty quickly:

See above, but alas, here's 2 more examples of 6+ year old OZ barrels from Shortbarrel. These came out last December as a special pick for the Georgia Bourbon Community group. I have the 6.6 year one and can confirm it is delish. There are 100% 7+ year old OZ barrels out there at this point.

Just snagged a couple bottles of Stagg Jr randomly when walking into a liquor store in Sandy Springs.

Planning to put a dent into at least one of those. Also really like New Riff (single barrel is my favorite). My brother in law lives best to the distillery and excited to see them making their way down here

Just got a bottle of Stagg Jr batch 14 in a trading group I'm in. If I end up watching the game from home Friday, I think I'm gonna do a blind of all 6 of by Stagg bottles - Batch 14 (130.2), Batch 18 (131), 22B (130), 23A (130.2), Tower Store Pick 138.9, and Total Wine Store Pick 131.

This guy has won every blind I've put it in and drinks WAY lower than its proof. All of my other Staggs drinker hotter than this one (haven't tried the 14 yet).
I just got two bottles of Stagg Jr! Let me know if you'd be interested in a trade for one. No worries if not. I think mine are similar proofs, but can double check

At MSRP? That's awesome! I got lucked into my first 4 at MSRP and then traded for the Batch 14.

New Riff is solid. I especially like their Balboa Rye and the Silver Grove stuff.

I could be down. What batches did you snag?

Sounds absolutely disgusting. I never criticize someone else's taste in whiskey, but that's not whiskey, just like screwball or fireball aren't whiskey. Gross.
never had a caramel apple moonshine? this the same, just whiskey. also, its good as hell. heaven forbid people have different taste.

I didn’t criticize anyone’s taste. I said it sounds disgusting. That’s my opinion. Screwball and fireball are gross.

Reminds me of the Old Fasioned debate. Some mixologists say keep as simple as possible so that you don’t cover up a good bourbon. Other recipes can be quite complex. I find that both approaches can be quite good and either approach can fail.

This has nothing to do with anything other than mixing a good drink is a subtle art. One can use exactly the ingredients called for but get one little part wrong and it makes all the difference.

An old fashioned is like.....???? What's that other thing that people say that is never bad, there's only good and better? I know there is something else but at my age I can't remember. I want to say apple pie or chili but I don't think those are correct. 🤔 :);)

Oops, I’m in the dark here.

I make Old Fashioneds two different ways. The complicated way is really really good but if you mess up the ratios it kind of goes south. But after 2 1/2 ounces of bourbon you add Italian maraschino cherries, orange slice, bitters, sugar cube, lemon peel and club soda. It’s worth the effort if done right.

The other approach is just bourbon, the fruit options and Amaro Luciano. Easy, quick and predictable.

The easiest way is 2 fingers of good bourbon and sip. Bourbon is sweet enough without any added sugar or other adulterations.
