What whiskey are you drinking?

Neat is its own thing. I like it that way alone or with one or two friends for a long mellow, relatively quiet time. Even known to enjoy it that way with a Cuban cigar.

Old Fashioneds, to me, are for larger more social occasions when I’m either going to drink that or a vodka martini or a gin and tonic.

For me things have to have context. 😀
If you are into old-fashioneds, I stumbled into a new one at a party a few days ago. It's a brandy old-fashioned. It was so good I picked up my own bottle of brandy (never purchased before) and am sipping on one now. It's simple, muddle a slice of orange (w/out peel), a drop or two of simple syrup, 4 drops of Angostura Bitters, add 2 fingers of brandy, a bit of club soda and 2 maraschino cherries with a dollop of juice. Fill your glass with ice. It's a nice change of pace.

never had a caramel apple moonshine? this the same, just whiskey. also, its good as hell. heaven forbid people have different taste.
We spent Christmas in the N. Ga. mountains and stopped by Grandaddy Mimm’s moonshine distillery tasting room on Christmas Eve. They have a neat tasting option of 8 mini shots for 7 dollars with probably 20 bottles to choose from. We walked out with a bottle of their 109 proof two year barrel aged shine which tasted very bourbon-esque and a jar of their 35 proof Georgia Cream Pecan Roll which is a sweet dessert sipper. Fun place if you’re in the area.

Minnick's Top 100 of 2024 came out this weekend. He did it different this year and instead of tasting (and spitting out) all 100 in one sitting, he tasted over a week span and got it down to 25 for the live stream and legit tasting.

RR15 seems to be pretty much everybody's whisky of the year. I haven't had it, but everybody I know who has has been all about it. GTS is pretty much always top 10. This the first year (at least since I've been paying attention) that any Van Winkle has made the list.

Larceny Barrel Proof with another solid performance. I haven't seen C924 yet, but definitely looking to grab that one.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not interested in doing anything to promote Minnick. He has leveraged his celebrity is such an offputting way, to me, and ruined the availability of so many of my favorite bottles that I hope he just goes away. Wild Turkey always puts out a good product, especially when Eddie is choosing, so RR15 doesn't surprise me.

Can't go wrong with 1910. I always keep a bottle of 1910 and 1920 on the bar. I wanted to grab a bottle of 1924, but never ran into one. I did get a few more OF Single Barrel Barrel Strengths, another OF Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye, and my first OF Single Barrel 100 proofer. I'm a fan of most Brown Forman juice.

I don't do much scotch, but that does sound interesting.
Tried the tale of ice cream. It was unique and good but not a daily drinker for me.

Also tried this recently and will absolutely buy another bottle:

Meh. Maybe you've seen/experienced different things than me, but I don't really see this. He's been around longer than most, but he's less known to most than the current wave of whiskeytubers. He loves his ascots (which is pretty douchey), but other than that he seems like a pretty normal dude who just happened to make a career drinking whiskey. I'd do it if I could too.

As far as availability of products, again, he's got so much less influence than whiskeytubers that he barely moves the needle on availability. The only time of year he has any influence is now - when his year-end top 100 comes out. Even then though, the bottles on the list that are rare and allocated were already rare and allocated. The bottles that are more readily available usually stay pretty much that. Last year for example two Larceny batches made his top 10, but I still see those sitting on shelves to this day. The NBC batch he put at #4 last year is STILL available on their website (only place it's available). Most of his throughout the year reviews are behind his Patreon paywall and the available stuff is just him hanging out drinking a random whiskey with a random celeb.

The gripe most people have with him is that his list can be so off from everybody else's that there's a big belief that he promotes what he's paid to promote. Nobody has actually provided any actual evidence of that though. They site the Larceny batches in the top 10 last year as proof. Who knows though. I have both of those batches and they are damn good. Would they make my top 10 if I had access to everything he has? Who knows. The NBC batch def would. He doesn't include things like 13th Colony Double Oaked because of the controversy and usually doesn't include Van Winkle stuff because he doesn't think they are anywhere near as good as their premium would indicate. He doesn't include some finishes, like amburana, because he doesn't like it. He's very clear that this is his list and he likes to promote whiskeys who are doing different things and doing them well.

I take his list with a grain of salt like I do most of the whiskeytubers. I think they're interesting, but they're all just their opinions/palates. I may pursue a bottle on his or any list if I know it's available, but like I said most of the stuff on these lists is made allocated and mostly unavailable by the distilleries, not Minnick or any other whiskeytuber. Half the stuff on his lists usually isn't available in most markets because it's smaller distilleries, so you have to order online if available.

Hating Minnick or any of the other for their reviews and lists is like hating Michelin for their stars, James Beard for their awards, or hell even Yelp for providing reviews.

I admit it is very personal. I think he is very douchey and pretentious. He's created his own awards...Ascot Awards. Douchey. I think he bought his way into Bourbon Pursuit, which I really liked before he got involved. I don't follow YouTubers for anything. I stopped chasing bottles or trying to keep up with all the new options. I HATE any finished bourbon. I think it adulterates the flavor not enhances it. Bourbon is sweet enough on it's own; it doesn't need help.

He put out a list of best bottles under $40 several years ago and almost all of my go-to daily sippers were on it. Bottles like Knob Creek (which went from $28 on sale and $32 every day to about $45), Early Times BiB (now allocated and can hardly be found, but that has a lot to do with BT, as well), WT101 (jumped 25% in price), Evan Williams BiB.

How much is the influence of these people vs. overall inflation? I used to pay $27 for the 1.75 L Beefeater's Gin. Now it's nearly $42 where I live. $17 for EW 1.75 L (my go to bourbon for mixed drinks). Now it's $28.

If you ever have a chance to travel through Illinois, there's a chain called Binny's Beverage Depot scattered throughout. I have been their twice in the last year (just looking of course). Prices are anywhere from 35 - 50% lower than what I pay locally depending on brand and bottle. Technically, this is illegal so I don't recommend it but I have heard of some people who will buy in bulk there and transport it home to avoid paying outageously high taxes in their localities. But I'm sure that none of us would do it so I'm just reporting here on the bad stuff that I have heard of orther people doing. Can you believe it? Sometimes people can be so disappointing.

I live in Chicagoland (Illinois). I have 5 Binny's within a 10-minute drive from my house. Taxes on alcohol are pretty high in Cook County, but they do have some good prices. I travel all over the US and am always going into big box liquor stores and smaller liquor stores (I swear I don't have a drinking problem...yet) and comparing prices. Some are good, but most are not good. It's a supply and demand thing right now, but when the bandwagoners move on from bourbon, there should be a glut of bourbon on the market with all the expansion the big boys have made in the past 10 years.

I get a 1.75L of Knob Creek for $51.99 on sale (usually about $65). They're competing with Costco. Makes it hard to beat when one of your favorites is affordable like that (no thanks to the ascot-douche).

I haven’t bought Knob Creek in a while and didn’t know the price had crept up that much.

Just curious, have you found anywhere that is competitive with them on pricing? I haven't. In addition, there selection is pretty hard to match as well.

Completely understandable. He can be douchey and pretentious for sure. I will say he isn't always that way though. I've seen some great "interviews" with musicians and athletes where he is completely just a normal dude. He's a big Ok St guy.

Agree on chasing allocated stuff. If I happen into them (for MSRP or close to it) I'll buy them, but I'd rather take a chance on some of the newer stuff or a single barrel. I like some finished stuff, particularly cognac, madeira, and some of the port finishes. Finishes can be used to hide bad bourbon for sure, but that isn't always the case. I good finish on a good bourbon at the right time can be magical. Not all of them are sweet - much like not all bourbons are.

Early Times being allocated depends strictly on where you live. It's on every shelf here in GA. That and Eagle Rare, which is also on most shelves about half the year, are two of my favorite daily drinkers. Also, yeah, the price jumps are a combination of inflation and store markups. Total Wine (at least in GA) has started marking everything up, whereas it used to be the place to get things for MSRP. I don't go there anymore.

Well, first Binny's has to have it on the shelf. Not happening with any Buffalo Trace product except maybe Benchmark. You want BT on the shelf...Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Frankfurt. You want Weller...go to Texas. Eagle Rare...Carrolton. Actually, the Binny's in Evanston had 3 cases of Blanton's Gold ($139) sitting out on the floor Monday. 1 per customer (and you had to have a Binny's card so they could track that you only bought 1).

I got to know one of the general managers pretty well. I spent a fair amount of money there and got some great bottles. Then Covid hit and I drank them all.
