We sit in 109 and stand for the majority of the game, like everyone around us. Nobody should be shamed for that.

Our seats are in 109 too. Pretty much the whole section stands most of the game and yells on third downs, etc.

I would send an email directly to J Batt ([email protected]) and explain what happened.

Lower west (and some of upper west) is full of some passionate old alumni. It’s usually the loudest part of the stadium that’s not the student section.

Thats where the player and coaches families sit.
We used to sit in lower west row 6 on 40 because of medical and wife liked see the players interact on sideline. There was some excessive standing but not much. But the crowd around us was passionate and knowledgeable. Most fun was standing and cheering for o or d as they came off field after a big series.

Realize that it's not all about you. Others have the right to enjoy the game too. Standing the whole time isn't your right. Find an area that stand and join them.

I honestly believe there should be specific areas designated as standing only. There's a way EVERYONE should be able to enjoy their BDS experience.

Completely disagree! There should be some courtesy shown by all fans, if there is someone standing in front of you then you should be able to stand so you can see. If there is no one sitting in front of you, be curious and sit down respecting others. If it is 3rd or 4th down, all bets are off (especially if we are on defense). Standing and making noise on 3rd and 4th down when we are on D should be mandatory for the crowd.

At the 2010 North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech game, a fan (who had kids) behind me complained that I was standing and they couldn't see. I was less than courteous in my response. Security ended up moving me to another seat in the section. This was Upper West. In hindsight, I could have been more courteous.

With that said - I'll relay a story from when I took my father-in-law to an Atlanta United game. I believe this was during their MLS winning run. He said to the people in front of him "You're gonna have to sit down when the game starts, I'm not going to be able to see". Their response 'You won't be needing those seats". Man, that's a raucous atmosphere..

Sorry for your experience - but don't let it ruin your enjoyment. Get yourself in a raucous section and cheer the brave and bold.

After moving up to row 33 and , we met 2 short, enormous, jovial fans who sat in front of us. They could not fit on seats in aisle so folks moved over. They were fun folks who had no idea what the option was all about. One so round that one leaned on my knees. I never stood up but enjoyed explaining what the plays were about. They eventually moved thier seats to a less congested area.
Things work out over time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger miss in understanding what was written. The audacity to think that the only way you can be a good fan and be loud and supportive is to stand the whole game and make others around you conform to your way of watching a game is pure selfishness. There’s a time to stand, but that’s not the entire game.

I’ve also suggested on here and to GTAA that there should be standing sections in the field. These are sections where the intent is to stand, not sit. That way everyone can watch the way they want.

After sleeping on it for a night, we have decided to just forgo attending Tech games moving forward. It isn’t worth the hassle to be treated like crap. I know, no need to announce my departure. But here it is. Best of luck everyone.

I sit in lower west in 105 and witnessed the same thing as the OP. Two curmudgeons that didn't stand up, yell, or even clap at all the entire game telling people in front of them to sit down. Also, did it in a rather rude tone and these people were infrequently standing for only big 3rd or 4th down plays. Bottom line, there are people of all types in all sections and some patience and communication could go a long way towards resolving most of these issues.

For my part, I am a peaceful guy and a passionate and vocal GT fan. Had anyone approached my brother, who could barely even get to our seats in his last game at BDS, with the attitude presented in this thread, I just don’t know what might have ensued. If I would have actually struck anyone, it would have been a very bad decision on my part. So, for my part, I wouldn’t want that, but that person would definitely hear my thoughts on the matter.

Maybe, as a way to increase stadium capacity, in the refresh they can create a standing only section with no seats. Cram them in. Problem solved.

I can walk forever, but standing in one place lasts for about 5 minutes before I need to sit down again. However, 3rd and 4th downs on defense are special downs and I would never grouse about standing or others standing if I can't. It's just the people who want to stand the whole game and don't care about the people behind them I can't abide.

Only eclipsed by when the defense has momentum and takes the field to a cheering lower west and student section IMO.

San Diego St has a very proud basketball culture and I’ve heard they got rid of their general admission “supporters” section adjacent to the students (who are colloquially known as “The Show”) this season. The section was responsible for showing new students traditions and linked alumni to current students. Their alumni say the atmosphere and energy in Viejas has completely fallen off due to this new policy and they even have petitions forming around reinstating it.

Anyway, all this to say that GTAA needs to have a “you’re not a student (anymore) but still a passionate fan” section. They want TV revenue, big crowds, and successful teams - time to start making hard but healthy long term decisions that prove that.

Yes, plus, plus. I can't stand like I used to, but if people are standing in front of me, I'll slowly get up, leaning on my hiking sticks as I do. But … I'm in 104, a pretty sedate section and I only have to get up for 3rd down or so. I can peak around the standers; there's always space for that. Oth, I have run into situations where I would have liked to have the "security" do something about the whippersnappers standing all the time.

I sympathize with your situation, however. I hope you can find a solution that works for you in your next season ticket. That I hope you buy

We stood and cheered during defensive 3rd downs and after big offensive plays. We will not apologize for standing during a football game. Maybe we are just 3 less sidewalk fans that Tech just doesn’t need anymore?? My Dad has been going to games since the 60s and I have been going since the late 90s.

We need you and your family, buddy. Sorry this happened, but it sounds like folks have some great suggestions for other more standing-friendly sections. Change it up next year and continue to help us grow this program back to it's rightful place!

Sorry if I implied that. I remember someone posting in the Duke MBB post game thread last year that they got chastised for standing during a defensive possession of the tied game with a minute to play . Tech fans are definitely not above making their distaste with standing heard even in the most crucial moments of the game.

I’m not really even loud (maybe I am compared to our average fan) but I’m pretty sure the guy and his son in front of me moved seats/left late in the UNC MBB game last year because I was cheering/making noise to disrupt the offense/urging a defensive stop from our team in a tight game. This is just how fans at other ACC schools help their team win and our basketball program is down so bad that this current generation of fans doesn’t understand that.
