And we saved Gaudette and Loy. Talk about a master class by Ramsey.

Get down 10-0, let all your bullpen arms get some action and then score 14 runs the next 6 innings to win and save your best arms! Genius!

Happy with the result, but a true masterclass would've been not starting the guy that's obviously not a starter and instead either rolling the dice on one of the young guns who clearly is or going with a more reliable guy like Loy. Of all the options available, I just don't see how we settled on Shadek. They've got a lot of stats and data that they probably used to determine he was the choice for them, but ...

17 career college starts for Shadek now. 61.1 IP. That's under 3.2 innings/start (it was already under 4 before today). His ERA in those 17 starts? 8.36. Walks + HBP in those games? 55 in 61.1 IP.

He's a stud as a reliever though. Like I've been saying all season, he screams closer to me.

I don’t have a problem with them attempting to give Shadek an opportunity. We will need 4 starters for Omaha and he has certainly done a fine job in his last few outings as a reliever. I have made it known I would have rather us of stuck with Underwood as the 3rd guy and worked through his early season struggles. I just think it’s impossible to say he’s “failed” with 13 IP and today has been his highest PC all season. Maybe we worked out his kinks in midweek bullpen action while still finding a way to win games, but I do believe we should move Blakely to the #2 starter and either.

A: Stay with Porter
B: Go back to Underwood

But, I think it’s clear even if Underwood isn’t the #3 he should be coming in relief on Sundays.

Always love a good comeback.. and glad our hitting is doing so well!

Not looking a gift horse in the mouth.. If we can clean up our first inning.. We can be really, really good. The last eight games, we have been hit hard early:

#DateOpponent1st Inn Runs
35Apr 11Florida State (G3)1
36Apr 14Georgia Southern4
37Apr 17at N. Carolina (G1)3
38Apr 18at N. Carolina (G2)3
39Apr 19at N. Carolina (G3)1
40Apr 21vs. Georgia2
41Apr 24Wake Forest (G1)3
42Apr 25Wake Forest (G2)6
It's just more fun to let them celebrate early and then demoralize them. Seriously though, while I know we would prefer not to give up these early runs, the team is able to take away from it that they just need to keep grinding and eventually our lineup will overcome the opposition. I feel like as a team they are confident and do not hang their heads. Just the opposite. They focus on just their at bat and let the next guy worry about his and on down the line.

My issue with it is that there are better more obvious options that we should have been giving opportunities.

Shadek had 16 career starts before today and was already averaging less than 4 IP per start and had an ERA over 7 in those starts. Obviously a lot of those were at Rutgers and not here and he was solid in his only other start here (against 15-24 Stony Brook), but nothing in his outings has shown me that he should've been an option to start. He had one outing of 4.0 against Northwestern, but all his other appearances have been brief. And in most of them, even the best of them, he's had guys on base and been in murky situations. He was averaging right at a walk/hbp an inning before today. He has control issues similar to Porter. He also doesn't have the mix to be a starter imo. He's basically a 2 pitch pitcher.

I'll give it to you that none of the other option are the "obvious" answer either. However, they are more "obvious" starters imo given their pedigree and mix.

I like Loy a lot (whether it be starter or reliever) and would probably start him because I feel like he's the most proven/reliable option. He doesn't have a history of getting deep into games either, but his career ERA is probably about half of Shadek's and he doesn't walk or hit guys at anywhere near the frequency Shadek does.

I think Underwood or Willcox were both WAY better options than Shadek too. I even would've given Vicens a shot before Shadek. Heck I would've given Angelakos the ball before Shadek.

I agree that we're going to need 4 starters and we really only have 2 that are givens right now. I just think we wasted an opportunity to get one of the actual options out there to start a meaningful game. I'm not going to pretend that just because Cooper was successful in relief today it means that he would've been successful if he started. However, I would've much rather give myself the chance to know that than what we did.

Even if Porter is back next weekend, I'm not sure what we should do in that spot. All today did was clarify what seemingly should've already been known imo - that Shadek isn't the answer in that spot. At least we've got a non-conference series next weekend to try something new.

Again, I like Shadek. I REALLY like Shadek. I just hate him as a starter. I think he's gonna be big for us out of the pen.

Personally I like keeping Blakely as the Sunday guy. I like having a guy that we are confident can get us a win to either take the series or go for the sweep. Getting that Sunday win is good for the momentum of the team as they head into the next week of action. Say what you will about McKee's performance but we have only lost one Friday game all season which puts us in great position to win the series. Then find a way to win the second game riding the momentum of the Friday win and we have Blakely sitting there on Sunday in good position to go for the sweep.

Now that logic changes for me when we get to the post season and that second game becomes critical to either put you in the diver's seat to win the regional, or pick up the must win to stay in the regional.

Same. Right now I don't think you have to think about Fri/Sat/Sun and your #1/#2/#3 in that order. Like you said though, as we get closer to the postseason we'll need do what's necessary to make sure that Blakely is ready for the #2 spot whenever that is.

I found this quote from the Wake head coach after Friday's game very interesting:

FROM COACH WALTER
"That's a game where we certainly had chances to win—too many free 90s. I think we had 10 free 90s on the day. I feel like they earned two of the six runs they got, obviously with the [Drew] Burress single followed by the [Jarren] Advincula home run. The other four runs they got, we didn't catch a flyball that led to a run; we had some walks that led to runs. You just can't afford to give up 10 free 90s against a really good offense. Offensively, we didn't do quite enough. We had our leadoff hitter on in a couple of different innings and couldn't move them around, including the last inning. We needed to do a better job when we got a leadoff hitter on and move them around. They did a good job, and they got their leadoff around there for their sixth run. We didn't do the same on our side. I still like where we are in this series. We've got a lot of pitching left. We have [Blake] Morningstar, [Rhys] Bowie, [Marcelo] Harsch, [Will] Ray and [Ryan] Bosch, so we got a lot of good arms left. We got to come out tomorrow and play good baseball and get a good start out of Troy Dressler." - Head Coach Tom Walter

The three guys he mentions in this quote "feeling really good about"....we hammered today. That has to be pretty demoralizing for that team.

I wouldn’t judge Shadek soley on his starts at Rutgers. Porter IMO has shown us he has the stuff but has also at times had the worst command on the team and he was given an opportunity and excelled in his first few starts before blowing up against UNC. In Shadek’s last few outings particularly against UNC he was un-hittable so I think the staff like with Porter, Blakely etc gave him his opportunity because they felt it was earned over other guys who aren’t already in key relief roles.

IMO Shadek is a big time middle relief pitcher who can keep a game tight and is tough to hit when you are going from a Blakely, McKee, Underwood etc because of the change of pace. I prefer guys like Barfield and Patel in closer roles. Guys who keep you off balance but you aren’t going to worry about them hanging multiple breaking balls or walking 2 guys in a key spot.

Just how rare is this comeback win from a 10-0 deficit in baseball? What are the odds?

Seems like one (or a bunch?) of y’all cerebral Georgia Tech technological mathematicians would have the answer.
None of you technological mathematicians responded to my question, so I Googled it to find out myself.

Answer: Between 0.5 and 1 percent.

I'm not exclusively, but those were indeed starts (against mostly lesser opponents). He hasn't shown any traits of a starter here imo. I addressed that above - routinely lots of traffic on the bases, largely due to his high walk/hbp numbers, mainly brief appearances (largely due to the stuff I just said), really only 2 pitch mix, both times he's started he's thrown low 90s instead of the high 90s he pumps in in that reliever role (I think he knows he can't sustain that juice over the innings he needs to be a starter). He has great stuff, but much like Porter very little control and consistency. They're pretty similar in a lot of ways, but I still have a little more faith in Porter because he has more of a pitch mix he can rely on. If one pitch is off, he's still got a couple in play. Shadek seemingly throws mostly a slider/fastball mix. If one is off he's limited to the other. He has a curve that's more offspeed, but it looks like just a slower version of his slider. I think I've seen him throw maybe a handfull of changeups. It's mostly just slider/fastball.

Shadek is dominant in one inning stretches. He's occasionally looked good stretched over two. You can handle a free base an inning when it's 1 inning, but when you start seeing free bases over several it's trouble. His numbers, pitch mix, and even attributes/mannerisms scream closer. There's a reason they had him closing in the Cape.

His absolute best and the most consistent thing I think I've seen from him prior to today has been coming in and getting 2 batters out quickly and then struggling to get the third.

Barfield can close for sure. Patel is a (very good) long relief guy. I wouldn't ever really call him a "closer." When he's on I think Campbell could close too, but he hasn't been as good this season as he was last. Gaudette could obviously close as well. I just think Shadek would thrive in that role if we committed to it.

I have friends staying with me this weekend and we were on the beach at game time. I watched the first inning on the beach and turned it off. Checked the score couple hours later and learned of rain delay. Got back to condo at ~4pm, turned it on my TV and we were up 13-11. Amazing team!

Still can’t believe we won last night. Really cool to see the biggest comeback this century.

Great opportunity here to maintain / increase our ACC lead today with a sweep. Go Jackets!

I don’t think Saturday was anything more than giving Shadek an opportunity against a big time hitting lineup to see how he would respond in the role. Do I agree with it when we only have a 1.5 lead for first place? Yeah in a way I do as Ramsey has stated in almost every interview everything we are doing is for June. Obviously Shadeks outing went worse than anyone could have dreamed but it’s back to the drawing board for the 3rd and 4th starters..

How "out there" is this theory regarding the starting rotation/plan?
So... if the goal is to find and 'establish' a 4-pitcher rotation, let me throw this out there. Tate and Blakely are set as 2 of the 4 right now. Loy is where my thought gets a little unconventional. What IF... from basically Day 1, Loy is the 3rd guy. The coaching staff has enough confidence with his experience... they are comfortable having him be in the long-ish relief role in critical situation while they go about finding the 4th starter (at twice the rate...if that makes sense). In other words... as the season winds down toward post-season play, Loy will settle into a starting role permanently and this whole time (probably longer than the coaching staff hoped), they've been auditioning different guys to find the best #4. It may have been almost settled with Buursema until last weekend. Not sure we know now if his "out" status this weekend related to something going on at UNC. Regardless... if feels like the we're still really looking for a starter (or 2) to be identified. Now Underwood looks like a great option.

This is actually a solid train of thought and it may actually be very accurate. As they said on TV. “Matt Taylor told us today he is looking for his 4th starter.” I didn’t think of it too deeply when they said it , but I think you may have nailed it Fred.
