Sometimes stuff just hits me. Tony Gwynn was a contact hitter's contact hitter. Just unreal compared to today's approach.

I met him once, but after the Don Zimmer days managing S.D.(Zim became a family friend, just like Ron Luciano who umpired after playing football at Syracuse). Tony said his secret was a slight uppercut, although he confessed that on certain pitches depending on location, he might level out. It’s probably why he didn’t pop up, fly out or hit the monster dingers.
