Ah, it's a study in contrasts alright. On one side a school that has actually tried to maintain a modicum of restraint in recruiting (Tech) and on another one that obviously decided some time ago that athletes were, you know, not like regular students, but some strange breed of doofuses that we wouldn't normally let into the college under any circumstances (UNC).

It's too bad. The one thing that is missing in here is a reference to the underlying snort of laughter by Brits everywhere when they see how much academic standards have been distorted to provide training for professional athletes at the public expense. "Oh, how extraordinary! Aren't the Americans quaint?" True enough; some of us are.

The sad thing about the UNC athletic cheating scandal, is it really is such a great academic university. The whole situation is unfortunate, but I think in the long-run the university will survive and continue to excel even outside of athletics.

The really sad truth is that this, and worse, is widespread throughout college football. It's bad enough when other schools offer easy, legitimate majors. This stuff makes it impossible for rigorous, academic institutions to compete on the athletic fields.

It is obvious that the schools who cheat are able to recruit more of the top star athletes. However, I, for one, do not believe that is GT's main problem. There are enough student athletes with good grades available to GT, but they choose other schools because they like the school, coach, etal. Most of these top students still want quality education.

The problem with many of the remarks about Tech's lack of progress on the football field is blamed on the school instead of the coaches. Are people really immune to the truth that many of the qualified athletes, who do not attend Tech, is that they are not enamored of its coach. I have all the confidence in the world that the right coach with the right charisma, ability to lead young men, and a good football mind could easily produce a big winner at GT. We are a well known school across the United States as well as being close to the hot bed of recruiting in Florid, Georgia, and even relatively close to Texas. Atlanta is a hub of activity and offers many recruits an excellent chance at future jobs, and other activities.

It seems some of the fans have this weird idea that Paul Johnson is the only coach in the world who could possibly recruit at Tech and also make Tech into a winner. Open your eyes, there are coaches all over America with less talent that Tech has or can have that win big every year at lesser known colleges and some at more well known colleges. Yes, it is obvious that Tech is disadvantaged because of the scholastic requirements, but Tech is absolutely not shut out from all the available quality candidates, they just choose to go elsewhere.

If the present coach could win big each year, and the recruits were enamored of him, he would have to turn recruits away each year.

There's many factors the go into a prospect's decision to attend college and where to play football, academics and coach likeability is just two. The academic hurdle is multi-faceted, imo. It's much more than just academic rigor or limited majors. More importantly, academics what defines the entire school experience. Most blue chip prospects, yes - even the smart ones, want to play in front of 80,000+ rabid fans every Saturday and be splashed across Sports Center daily. They want an active social life at school that involves having time to relax off the field and actually interact with good looking girls. You don't get that at GT or not nearly as much as at a typical factory - and most of these things will not change, even if we get real good at football.

There's also the lack of having a realistic shot at a national title. Several factory schools in the area offer that, we do not.

There's very few coaches out there that can overcome these built in recruiting hurdles and convince blue chip prospects to forego the multitude of surrounding factories. We need a coach and staff that know who to target, first of all, and then how to sell those unique individuals. Propects must value education above, or at the very least, equal to football.

dressedcheeseid: You did not get the gist of my reply. The gist of the reply is that there are other coaches out there who can and will get better athletes at Tech than Paul Johnson has done. If he does not get it done this year, we will have our chance to see. However, the AD will have to be very wise in his choice of coaches. It must be a coach that uses offensive and defensive systems that are fun to the athletes, fits the mold of Tech recruiting, and a coach who has the charisma that attracts athletes. Again, the gist of the reply is that anyone who thinks Paul Johnson is the only coach who could succeed at GT are fooling only themselves.

I have never heard a single recruit say anything except praise about CPJ. To even pretend to know that CPJ's personality is off-putting to an 18 year old kid, who has a much more personal face-to-face interaction with him is ridiculous. I don't claim to know, but I'd be less surprised to find out that the kids today love the irreverence and disdain CPJ shows towards the stupid media members (as opposed to the smart ones) than hold that against him.

The public persona we see most of the time is somewhat acerbic, but these kids get to sit down and chat with him one-on-one. I'd venture to guess that essentially all of the recruits enjoy talking to him.

I guess this logic will be tested by how well Chris Peterson, now coach of the Washington huskies, will do when he has to play decent teams every week instead of once-twice a year.

Also by your standards, CPJ did amazing at GA Southern when he won back to back NC's and was 62-10 with lesser talent than here at Tech.

You should have stopped at "...and was 62-10...".

Ninety + per cent Southern's schedule was made up of teams that comprise the cupcakes of our schedule. PJ knows his system and when it is run against the cupcakes, big things can and usually happen.

GTranJ: It is also a fact that CPJ's team was playing less talented teams at Georgia Southern and did not need the type of athletes of D1. You are comparing apples and oranges. Yes, Georgia Southern and Navy play some good teams, but overall the quality of their schedule is more suitable to his system. We do very well against the cupcakes before we hit the meat of the schedule.

I think it is debatable that our talent is superior to Southern's. Jaybo Shaw struggled in Statesboro in a similar manner as he did at Tech.
