It came directly from Stansbury himself in a published interview. Don't have the link, but you should be able to track it down. It was when he made his infamous "I have my man" gauntlet throwdown when asked why he was keeping the football coach after another 3 win season and fans in an uproar. They asked if it was because he didn't have the money for the buyout, and Stansbury flatly said no, he had the money and could have raised more if he needed to, but "I have my man". In the other AJC article during that time frame with Zelnak and Garrett, they made it quite clear that Stansbury has put his own career on the line by doubling down his support of the football coach, and it was quite clear Stansbury was made to understand that, during their conversations. If the football coach falls short again the coming season (I don't get the feeling from the major donors that 5 wins will be enough) and it's appearing he will be fired, Stansbury will not be the person making the next hire. He is all-in, riding with his man. The coach's buyout changes at the end of the 4th contract year - which is this December - when the full contract guarantee expires so if they wait until then it shaves over $3MM cash from what the coach is owed. However, if someone else will be making the next hire, it is Stansbury who is in danger of being escorted out of Edge mid-season, any buyout he may have is not dependent on the football calendar. It would make sense to find the next AD as soon as it is known a change will be made so the new AD can get settled in, put his organization in place, begin indirect contacts to determine interest from the up-to-date list of coaching candidates that every prospective AD always keeps at hand, vet them, and be ready to announce the new coach hire in December or January. So now it's "Wait and see" like the whale boosters said - "I came into (the 2021) season believing it. I’m not going to go there again until I see it."
