Thoughts on Conference Championship Semi-Finals

Why not postpone and relabel the SEC championship game, expand the SEC championship series to 12 teams, concluding with the CFP championship game. 12 teams all from the SEC. They already have the tiebreaker rules in place. Removes all arguments about who deserves be there.

Let’s just invite conference champs and the season suddenly matters. Add in 2-3 at-large teams to reward a top 10 runner up and you have it.

So, you are essentially telling 1 fanbase (either FSU or GT) that their season is over before we even get to September.

That is exactly what has been wrong with this sport for 100 years. No other sport operates that way because the goal is to find a champion over an entire season so teams can get better and prepare for a playoff system. Even baseball has figured out that the more teams you have in a playoff brings in more money both in the regular season and in the post season. And you allow more people to stay interested longer.

You will have to worry about players choosing to sit out as well. In reality there is no 12 team playoff. You will still have the same small handful of teams that actually have a chance. For potential first round picks on those 8-12 seed teams, how many of them are going to risk 2-3 more games when their team has little chance of winning it all?

Let’s wait until December before we make a sweeping declaration. Could be a bounce or could be none.
