Third Down Conversions

Thru games of November 6, Georgia Tech has converted 44/124 for .355 of 3rd down attempts to rank 101/130 in FBS and 14/14 in the ACC.
On defense, Georgia Tech has allowed 60/133 for .451 of opponent 3rd down conversions to be successful which ranks 112/130 in FBS and 13/14 in the ACC. (Yay, Duke keeps us from the basement!)

Since 2009 (because it was easy to look up back to that year), only in 2019 and 2015 has GT failed to convert at least 40% of 3rd downs.
Defensively, we gave up 45% or more in 2020, 2019, 2018, 2016, and 2014.

My hope is that 3rd downs become a point of emphasis.

That has been one of my concerns. You can improve in every area, but if you can’t stop third downs or convert 3rd downs, you’re never going to be a good team.

Oh, wow. I didn't look it up before. That is an incredible improvement!

Great point. Of course we also need to see the ydage needed but whatever it is , we ain't making it.Its killing us on Offense. btw-I think we were 0-0 !! in red zone I believe. hmmm

Our lack of converting third downs is much more driven by our dismal first down yardage. We are forever in third and 10 because of no or minus first down performance. Compare the First down performance of just our last two opponents compared to us. Way more one sided than the score.

To get better on third downs we need to quit getting stuffed on predictable plays on first down, everybody in the stadium knows were gonna run Gibbs straight up the middle on 1st down
