The "Paul Johnson" style of offense seems to doing ok in spots other than Atlanta so far . . .

Navy had a bye last week, rolled over FCS-level Colgate 48-10 easily enough to start the season two weeks ago. The Midshipmen play East Carolina this weekend, an ECU squad which gave the Florida Gators a tough game last weekend.

Army has had a rough start to the season, losing to FCS Fordham 35-57 and to UConn 17-22.

FCS-level
Cal Poly is off to an excellent start, having terrified Arizona State last weekend in a close 21-35 loss. The weekend before, Cal Poly knocked off offensive guru Bob Stitt's highly-rated Montana squad 20-19 with a last second field goal.

Kennesaw State's new program is off to a fine start at 2-0, having knocked off East Tennessee 56-15 and NAIA Edward Waters 58-7. Next up for KSU, the option-oriented in-state opponent of Shorter (see below).

The Citadel is off to a rare 2-0 start, last weekend defeating Western Carolina 28-10. The Citadel's head coach is a fellow named Mike Houston, in his second year at The Citadel. Previously, Houston led Div. 2 Lenoir-Rhyne to the Div. 2 title game in 2013, with a 29-8 record in three seasons there.

Speaking of Lenoir-Rhyne, the coach who followed Mike Houston continues with the option-based offense. The Div. 2 Bearcats started the season with a 41-28 victory over Div. 2 23rd-ranked West Chester, but last week was upset by North Greenville, L-R's first regular season loss in 23 games.

Div. 2 Shorter dropped its season opener last weekend to decades long veer powerhouse Carson-Newman, 20-7.

(Air Force, while still operating plenty of option, has branched out considerably from it in recent years. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) )
