Nice 5 yd pick up. Keeps the D honest and opens up the middle. Run a dive next and pick up 4-5 yards and make it 3rd and short or 1st down.

That play is a good illustration of the good and bad of Terrell Lewis.

Bad:

Had his eyes in the backfield following the motion to the other side of the field. Took a step toward the motion in the wrong direction instead of staying put covering his area and trusting his teammates on the other side to make a play.

Good:
His speed and quickness allowed him to recover and make a play on the WR after the CB almost whiffed on the tackle. Had he trusted his teammates on the other side of the field to make a play on the motion to that side, he could limited that to at most a no gain, and at best had a chance to dislodge the ball with a crushing hit. He can make up ground FAST.

Would be great if the wr could brake on angle towards sideline and qb could hit him on move. Well that would take a great arm but could buse a long gainer.

What do you think TL's assignment was? If CB makes the tackle on his man, TL is beside the point regardless.

This is a hard read, so TL deserves the benefit of doubt.

TL key is the LT. I can 98% assure that his reads are:

If LT steps inside: Slow play for bootlegs. Be over the top at 45 degree angle if rocket toss get out the gate.

LT steps outside or forward: Fill the alley: appears to be the force(the guy leverages the play back to the inside) if so, he has pitch on option

The tricky part: If you read high hat, get in zone. If there is no threat may be ask to undercut under #1.

The LT showed high hat but also took a step forward, so you are frozen. This is why RPOs (run/pass options) are very popular it freezes the D and gets the ball out fast.

I would like to see our DBs stop going skydiving when try to make tackle

Honest question: Why is TL playing the motion BEFORE the snap? That's my criticism of that one play. The LT hasn't declared before the snap, so there's nothing to read. No reason to step to the direction of the motion before the snap is made. Once the snap is made, OK, you have a point about reading his keys, but in this one play he looks like he's jumping to conclusions based off of the direction of the presnap motion. Would be interesting to see how he played the previous AB motion plays...if CPJ saw the TL was committing himself to the motion, then calling a smoke route to give Jalen a 1v1 opportunity with the DB. It's possible he was so use to playing against our offense he decided to go to the space he was use to going to on those plays.

Let's take a look at how ND played us:



If you notice the backside defenders on presnap AB motion plays, they are holding ground until the ball is snapped. Once the ball is snapped they are reacting. I'm not sure I saw any opposite side LBs stepping to the motion before the snap. If anything, the backside guys are stepping to the LOS after the ball is snapped.

To not get outflanked to the boundary. Let's look at the front and 7 and why he should cheat towards motion. So, here is a still photo post- tailmotion

So we went from a balanced formation 2x2 to motion creating 3x1. Pretty much all offenses account for the 5th defender for the Oline to block. 9/10 it's usually the MLB. With Brant accounted for out, we now to the strength side have a body for body 2 blockers for 2 defenders or if want to QB sweep we also have a 3rd blocker for the safety. Who is the only unaccounted for player, TL.
