I think the Vandy game shows what happens when a good but not great team thinks they can roll their football helmets out on the field and beat anybody.
Georgia beat us twice.

I don’t care how disciplined a team is and how well coached they are it is hard to come back from a loss like that and then play a team as hungry as Vanderbilt was. That loss was exactly what I expected.

I think we’ll have three (maybe four) backs play almost all the snaps. That being Jamal, Chad, and Maddox. Hopefully we steamroll GW and Temple to the point we can let some of the lesser known ones get some snaps.
Where do you think that the Transfer Hosley fits in? He was given jersey #0. Guys with those low numbers are usually core guys and see lots of snaps. Or is that a faulty observation?

Faulkner has nothing to prove to the fans. I agree. He has it to prove to AD’s who will be looking for a young innovative head coach. I’m not trying to over think it, but Faulkner has run the exact same system for several years now. It works. He had 4 and 5 star talent at UGA to do it with. At GT he looks like a freaking genius compared to those he was replacing at GT. He has had perfect timing in his career which is more than half the battle. That is why I say, this year I am most intrigued to see his offense and what he is able to do since for the first time he now has to follow success. And we quickly forget our record last year was the exact same as the year before so it’s not like we took a huge step. With 3rd year starters in King, Haynes, and Rutherford - yes, he needs to take a step forward. And I pray that GT‘s talent is to the point where we could run 5 basic plays and move the ball without being stopped. I just give our opponents credit for game planning us. Vandy’s staff ran circles around our staff which was very surprising to see and very depressing that we were so poorly prepared. And injuries aren’t an excuse. If your QB is injured to the point you can’t get it done then the staff should have had someone else prepared. I guarantee Dabo has spent a large part of his summer preparing for our offense. I want to see how Faulkner counters that.
In '23 we threw the ball deep a lot. In '24 we didn't. The offenses were VERY different in '23 and '24.

I think some of the 'predictability' you're referring to in '24 was due to the injury limitations to the QB & RB room. It was out of necessity and is probably not what Faulkner would have done if the team had been healthy.

I agree that seeing how Faulkner calls the offense this year will be very interesting. Not only should we be healthy, but we also have more capable backups at both QB and RB this year - hopefully diminishing the negative impacts that injuries will have on us. We're trotting a much better team than we've had in years...

I'm really interested to see what wrinkles we have in the run game this year. Outside of the Johnson years, I can't remember a time when we have had 4 guys in the running back room who could be trusted to tote the rock at any given time. It will be critical to have those options to keep everyone fresh throughout the season. Our run game could really open up the deep ball this year and our play action could be deadly.

Vandy is a legit team. And our staff did not prepare our team for that game. It was a scrimmage so who cares but the reality is there will be games this coming season our staff won’t have us prepared for. We’ve seen it before (Syracuse, VT, and ND) last season. Injuries are no longer an excuse for a program that wants to be ranked. We need to stop with the excuses like UGA beat us twice. 7-6 programs say things like that. 9-3 programs don’t.

What were we missing, like 7 starters? I feel like this fact is being completely glossed over with respect to this Vandy discussion.

Really don't see a point in stressing over a bowl game. A bunch of players opt out, a bunch play but have their minds already on the transfer portal, players/coaches are leading pep rallies the night before the game, etc..it's not a game that has the same level of focus as COFH or a regular season ACC game.

I am guessing most people who care about something like the Birmingham Bowl are probably longing for a college football they grew up with where these bowl games meant something. That ship has sailed and is not coming back. The only non-CFP bowl matchup I can remember from this past season aside from GT/Vandy is Alabama/Michigan and only because of how bad Alabama looked. I actually didn't even remember what that bowl was called (ReliaQuest).

your schtick gets tiresome. you seem to multiple anything negative by 10X and completely ignore anything positive, thread after thread.

Life and Tech football is not that bad. Try to relax a little and enjoy what the upside could be. We are currently undefeated for the upcoming football season and life is really good.

By the way on the actual topic, I am super excited to see one more go for Jamal Haynes. We have had so many good backs over the years, but I love watching that 5'9 frame get low and drive multiple defenders over the line to gain on a 3rd or 4th down...he has delivered us so many cathartic, primal-scream-at-your-TV/the-field moments over the past 2 seasons. I think below is my favorite run of his career - very arguably a 4 (or even 7) point single man effort...hopefully it will be replaced by a new run this season!

So do we prioritize innovation or simply getting the ball into the hands of our best players? There is a tricky balance between being unpredictable and outsmarting yourself.

Vandy showed that they could contain our offense by shutting down the QB run. We are going to see the same thing to open this season. Safeties are going to be up until we show the capacity to burn defenses down the field.

The running game is not so strong to run through defenses up in the box.

So this season, to me, hinges on King showing that he has worked out his arm issues in the off season. If we can show a legitimate vertical game, then this offense has the potential to be high powered.

If we cannot be balanced, then Key will lean heavily on the field position / clock management game.
Agreed, but with this caveat.

Imho, we need to do more option football if we want King to shine. The way to stop teams from keying on King is to give him pitch or handoff options when they do. That plays into the need for two back sets, as Ice says. By no means the usual set, I think, but enough to make actual veer plays work. This can also be done with WRs coming around.

Ok, I love option football and with Bohannon on board we have someone who can coach it. But success will probably rest on King's arm. Run counters and double options then pass it over the top as the safeties come up. As they will, if we run the plays right.

And block, of course, but I don't think that will be a problem except at first. I hope.

He had a couple of these types of runs that had me spilling beer. There’s special type of nastiness Key has installed in a few players and it shows in Jamal the most

Interesting thing - a long time ago, didn't the final season rankings come out after the regular season, but before the bowls?

If the bowls are no longer going to mean anything, I would just as soon they not count in the polls for the teams in question. We don't play a lot of regular season games in college football. Each one should matter. If one of those games is a toss up for any team because its starters may have hung up their cleats for "business reasons," that shouldn't reflect on the team and its season. Would love to see the bowl games go back to being "bonus" exhibition games that teams with successful seasons get to play.

An embarrassment of riches: 2020- Gibbs, Mason, Smith, Griffin, Howard

Or 2019: Mason, Howard, Cotrell, Griffin, Smith, Oliver or Graham

Had to look up Joe Ham’s last year: Gregory, Burns, Wilder, Rogers, Clinkscale, Ford. Maybe even Kitchen could have been a 7th.

He’s the maybe four. I’ve heard good things about him. Very talented. (and smart, given the Ivy education)

Can we open interior holes for the backs better this year? Our best successes last year were traps and misdirection. JH had no place to run inside last year. HK had a lot of success when he found a crease on what may have been a RPO or receivers were covered. We had no real deep passing with him after his injury. Hard for me to be critical of him as he is a great asset to the team and i really hope he has a great year.
It will be interesting to see how much PT that Philo will get this year.
