The Benz Music Was Way Too Loud!

My main complaint today is the obnoxiously loud music pumped through The Benz speaker system during pre-game, media timeouts, and halftime. Whoever thought it would be a great idea to play music that loud needs to be fired. Is that on GT or The Benz? Good grief, that was torture.

I don’t understand why you would torture people like that who spent so much time and money to come watch your football team play. Not cool

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that Arthur, after getting fined by the NFL for pumping in crowd noise, explicitly told the MBS designers to make the stadium as loud as possible. The result is the cacophonous echo chamber that is MBS. It's quite possibly the worst sounding venue I've ever been in.

MBS's acoustics are heavily influenced by the choice to have a retractable roof. Covered stadia naturally have more sound reflections (echo) than open ones like BDS. When the cover is also a hard surface like the steel that is required for MBS's mechanical oculus, the reflections are even worse. There are acoustic treatments that can help this, but the design criteria for sports (we want it loud) can conflict with those for optimum sound intelligibility. Good sound also requires careful design of the PA system but rarely is much expertise applied here.

I recall seeing many complaints about the sound when a concert was held shortly after MBS was first opened; I thought they tried some things to improve the acoustics but they obviously didn't go far enough. I don't plan to ever go to MBS for a concert, but if I did, I would try to get fairly close to the main speakers and wear earplugs. At least there the majority of the sound you hear isn't reflections.

I haven’t been to many games at MBS. I’ve only been to a couple of ATL United games. But this has reminded me of the storyline after a Garth Brooks (I think) concert that happened early on right after MBS was finished. Basically it made national news for such bad sound quality that most of the concert goers wanted their money back. Anybody else remember that?

From a pure acoustics perspective, I have to agree that it is without a doubt the worst I have ever been in. I assume they are using Dante or equivalent for the audio transport mechanism, I would think there could be some substantial fine tuning from purely a software perspective. Then make some addition tweaks with acoustic panels.

It seems like it is more of a "Hold my beer" kinda implementation.

I was there for that concert and was on the floor, maybe 10 rows in the stage, and couldn’t really make out anything that was being said or song. It was unbelievably bad.
