The 2025 QB Thread

Never too early to stir things up.

Many Gt fans might expect or hope for a conventional year at the QB position this upcoming season:

King will be the starter and play the whole year. He will throw the ball well and run even better and Gt will have a very good year on offense. And this thread will fade out.

But I think we see drama at QB for Gt next season.

Even with a healthy King, I think we see Philo have a package and play regularly. Philo's cause to play would be helped enormously by an emergence of a power running attack so that our offense is not so shallow and horizontal.

This is not the usual QB controversy because a team doesn't have a QB so that the back-up is popular among fans. The pending drama is because we have two QBs.

How would you handle it and how will the staff handle the position?

Picking this apart:

!. Is King going to be at GT next fall is the first question. It is possible a team like ND decides he is the perfect guy to be their QB next season and put a huge NIL deal together after Spring ball and he leaves GT. Unlikely but clearly possible.

2. Is King fully healthy so he can throw the football like he could in the 2023 season? That is unknown and if he can't then your scenario becomes highly likely.

3. Is Philo so good in Spring and Summer practice that he overtakes a mostly healthy King in the QB pecking order? Unlikely but possible.

Interesting question. Most likely scenario is King is the starter and plays almost every play until he gets hut again.

I'm as high on Philo as anybody, but unless HFK is hurt, Philo is likely only to see mop up duty. Perhaps they'll put in a package for him, but IMO the only way we see a lot of Philo is if HFK is hurt and can't go. He's earned the security with his absolutely stellar last year. When he was healthy, we had a good offense. When he wasn't, we didn't. Our team lives and dies on his shoulders.

Let's not forget what a luxury it is to have such a deep QB room...it's a good thing to have a capable backup - most programs don't.

If King is healthy I don't love the idea of a Philo package. King has an injury history, and I'd hate to see a repeat of this year, where King ended up not being able to go and Pyron was already banged up. A Philo package is likely to be less physical, so the risk would be lower, but I want him fresh at 100% health in case King gets hurt again.

I would honestly like to play both QBs regularly. Not mop up duty. #1 reduce the likely-hood of King getting injured. #2 to continue to rapidly increase Philo's skills by playing during important times, not just mop up where the opponent has put the 2nd string players in.

King going somewhere else for one year is 1% probability not. I would be much more worried that someone makes a crazy deal for Philo in the spring

"Gt verses Georgia What to expect."

He gives detailed breakdown of gt qbs in ncst game. Says King is injured and has not devloped as a passer. Says Phlo is young and slow to make throws, needs to kearn to step up, but will be better and had cannon.

Its a good film beeak down - pre uga.

The luxury of a tech fan having two. TWO. Quarterbacks that look like they could take us to the ACCCG, and/or start for most ACC teams, cannot be appreciated enough.

If this is the guy I think it is, he shows how much development Philo still needs in his reads. He’s going to be a great QB for us if he stays healthy and continues to develop.

I have also been thinking of what MtnWasp proposed and Mountain buzz added to. I want to see what the offense would look like with him in. We depend a lot right now on King's running. How effective would we be without much of a run threat from QB? If Philo is likely to start next year, it would be great to get him some real game experience. And maybe it would help us keep poachers away.

Got to get ahead and take risk/ show confidence in backups. But when will ol be ready. 3 year center was reliable on snaps.
Both tackles that were strong at end of year.are gone. The left guard was not playing as much at end of year. Assume we fix ol.

I think we will see a spirited spring practice and fall practice where both players get reps in an offense that gas a real rb and we pass deep more often. This way if philo is dinged we can get king in and run like uga and if kjng is dinged we can pass a little more without too much of a change jn offense..

Yea he is but he has kind of has confirmation bias- gt talent bad and uga talent good.

The film guy also has a good long film study on
WHY GEORGIA STRUGGLED TO Beat Ga tech.

He says its faulkner was great , king played like demon ( pass and run) and uga could not stop us.
In second half king was dealing on the receiver break. Our pulling guards and tight end blocking was deveststing.

He does good job of explaining the blocking, run defense and pass defense.

Very educational.

Made me wonder how King had so much improved zip on ball.

If two QB’s have significant offensive presence, that is much harder for a D to prepare for.

Philo needs a running game to complement his passing game. If Carrie/Maddux and our OL can step up to the plate next season, I would like to see Philo play quite a bit even if King stays healthy. Philo can stretch the field much more than King and with a healthy running game, we would be much more troublesome to defend and allow us to take the next step up.

"HK..."....has not devloped as a passer...." This is true
I love him anyway......but there is a QB competition in play this Spring.....
Which is OK...in fact, it's GREAT!

You guys are using last decades thought process when today is a new game. We have zero depth at QB because August isn’t here. Both those guys could be gone. Both guys could be here. One guy could get hurt or play lethargic. GT is now to the point where you play the player who is playing well. I personally don’t care to lose and then have threads about our “warrior” QB. I want a QB who wins. That bowl game left a bad taste in my mouth. A total waste for the fans and the program. We got blown up by Vandy and their QB kicked our butt in every phase. Our QB was limping around most of the game. It wasn’t his fault we lost but he sure didn’t play to the level of the Vandy QB. Our depth at QB did nothing for us.

Philo hasn’t shown enough for a factory to poach him yet. And he’s not going to leave the good thing he’s got going to be a starter in the Sun Belt or for some parallel program like Texas Tech.
