I think he was playing his fit, the outside run force defender. It's the DE responsibility to spill the play to him, but he got killed. The DE there only needs to get low and make a pile to spill it outside. He could've even cut that pulling guard to cause the pile up.

On close examination, it's definitely not a read, it's a designed qb run with a token fake to influence flow of defense. You know, one of those gimmick plays.
