Turned to UCF -TCU came to watch a few minutes; there was Ted Roof calling defensive plays for UCF. I didn’t realize he had moved again.

I've wondered for a long time how he keeps getting jobs, some of it has to be the coaching fraternity taking care of their own.
You're absolutely right. Stifles creativity and growth of the profession.

Alabama fans last year were griping about their last DC under Saban. Most teams would kill for their down years. About 110 out of 132 FBS fanbases are griping about their DC.
We have people here complaining about Santucci, three games in, when they just started recruiting a strong class and came in too late to keep some of our guys.
In FBS, there are a minority of DCs that are a cut above the rest. A couple of them are on a show cause, and can’t coach for a while. Of the rest, a number of them are getting HC shots (see: Venables). Some are moving to the NFL ranks (some of our old defensive coaches). That doesn’t leave many.
The rest have pros and cons. Maybe they’re great on game day and in development, but terrible to work with, rub boosters the wrong way, and don’t recruit. Or they recruit well, but are just average tactically.
You can have a young shooting star that doesn’t know how to do half the things a DC has to do, but knows a bunch well.
A few have found a home, and are happy, and just want to be left alone to coach.
Roof wasn’t going to get long-term affection at Oklahoma. He’s probably better than what UCF has had in a while.
