STEM Majors Get Bump in GPA

For all those conspiracy theorist who think the UGA grads that vote on these things have it out against GT, the house just unanimously voted 167-0 to give a 0.5 point bump to grades in STEM classes. This is helpful for those trying to maintain HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships. It's even called the Rambling Wreckification bill.

To make this GT football related, could be a reason why we saw some really good walk-ons commit to GT this class, and will be a factor going forward.

I assume it is only for HOPE purposes (and I'm well past the point in my career where college GPA matters), but I'd love to be able to claim a 4.05 GPA.

Looks like it helps a school get additional less gifted/hard working students stay elidigible for hope scholarship? This maybe be a good thing but it looks like we are lowering the bar to get scholarship. Is that going to improve the reputation of gt.

If in state kids get into gt w lower academic entrance requirement(?), then I see why legislature voted 100 percent.

Also the BOR not the legislature is the uga bias IMO.

What it does is level the playing field for receiving scholarship money across the University System. A 3.0 at uga or Georgia State (or any of the directional schools) is not a 3.0 at GT (or at least it wasn't when I was at Tech). It has absolutely no affect on the reputation (neither improving nor hurting). What it does is recognize that all degrees are not created equal, and encourage smart kids from Georgia to go into STEM-related fields, rather than disincentivizing them.

They're going to review and identify the STEM majors that qualify. But given that the bill is put together with GT at the forefront, it's safe to assume all engineering and science majors at GT would qualify. Don't think our Business majors would qualify even if they have "Bachelors of Science" before their degree.

Cut off for HOPE is 3.0...Zell Miller which covers more would be 3.3 GPA.

No its more like : 2 kids go to college in georgia one is a liberal arts major and one is an engineering major. Keeping that 3.0 GPA with a less intense curriculum is a lot easier than the engineering major bc of the difficulty of classes they need to take. It's not about getting into the school its about keeping HOPE while taking on a harder major. It only applies for the purpose of evaluating the HOPE scholarship though, it doesn't apply to what goes on your transcript.

My question is, for in-state recruits who are strong students able to do well at Tech and maintain a 3.0 on their own, doesn't it make more sense to have them join the football team as a PWO using the Hope scholarship rather than using a football scholarship? Football scholarships count against the 85 limit, but do PWOs on the Hope count? If not, then even if a smart kid is a 5* player, why not just sign him as a PWO and save a scholly?

Mentioned this on the other thread, but a football scholarship includes room and board. Not insignificant expenses.

Also I can confirm that schools do keep a separate HOPE and school GPA. I transferred in to Tech from a state university with a fairly high GPA (3.85 or so). While many of the classes didn't count, they did for HOPE purposes. So my HOPE GPA was able to steadily decline over my three years at Tech. I probably wouldn't have kept HOPE without that.

At this point, a full athletic scholarship will cover full "Cost of Attendance", which include room & board, books, and extra cash for things the school considers required, like a computer, etc.

AFAIK, the HOPE scholarships only cover Tuition and Mandatory Fees. But I was out-of-state, so...

More specifically the HOPE cover a PORTION of Tuition not all of it.

Outside of football, this will help other team sports that use fraction scholarships (ex. baseball) by helping them keep the HOPE - for in state students - and get the funds to cover the balance of tuition/fees, etc.

It actually probably helps baseball a whole lot more than it helps football. HOPE is a HUGE part of baseball scholarships since we can only give 11.7 schollies per year. And they are never full scholarships. So any money they get from baseball combines with HOPE to help pay for the college costs.
