The only place (other than recruiting) 99% of college or high school coaches can actually coach and make a difference is in the actual return/punt or /kickoff teams. They do not have a clue (and can really mess them up) with the actual specialist- kicker, punter, snapper. Last week other than telling players to stay in your lanes , personally I would have told the kicker where to kick it- (I will do that next year when I’m the coach!). Of course the end zone is what we expect- but, if that is not possible we have a lot of options other then what occurred last week. You can’t have a punter kicking (it is getting old hearing that). (We all really need to stay out of our kickers heads). I would make it a possible achievement in what I asked them to do, we might see positive results, probably not the end zone that we have become used to but, squib kicks, pooch kicks, corner kicks where the team can “”hold the containment “” and get some field position.

The Memphis kicker last night put the first 5 kicks into the endzone with no run back. (I did not watch after that). With a kicker like that I would let him kick. But with our kickers I would NEVER kick off to the best returner on the other team. That is something you can control. With our coverage history giving up a little field position is a much better tradeoff than risking a run back against our coverage when you let the other team's elite runner get the ball.
