Youngsters may not know or recall this, but the 5th street project occurred under President Wayne Clough's leadership. Midtown was becoming run down and Wayne envisioned Tech Square as a way to expand Tech while revitalizing midtown Atlanta. IMHO, 5th street ought to be renamed in recognition of Dr. Clough.

The whole vision of revitalizing Midtown, beginming with the 5th Street area started with the president immediately preceding Dr. Clough. Dr. Clough drove it and oversaw it happening.

Was it Crecine or Petitt before him? I'm thinking it had a lot more to do with Joe than his successor.

For all the crap Crecine gets, it was his vision that brought GT into the 21st century. He's the reason there's an Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. He's the reason GT was the Olympic Village, spurring the housing growth on campus. He fought the old guard and worked to expand the curricula, including adding new majors. He pissed a lot of the big money guys off when he put the Management in the College of Liberal Arts, but there were reasons for that that won't be brought out on a forum like this. For all his many faults, his vision was one of them. Clough followed his blueprint, expanded what Crecine started, and guided us to what we are today.

Joe Pettit was a great man and a fantastic academician. However, he was not interested in Georgia Tech being anything other than what it has traditionally been: a world class technical institution.
